While “top X” lists are a bit of a clichรฉ, we think itโs always interesting to see different perspectives and share what makes these anime shows stand out to us. As fans who have seen hundreds of anime, there are not that many that made us stop and say, “Wow, this is something truly special.” That said, here are the top 20 anime series, chosen by a team of writers whoโve watched hundreds of anime across genres.
1. Hunter x Hunter
Hunter x Hunter may have its fair share of hiatuses, but both the manga and anime are still as popular as ever. While the anime might not be as big as Naruto or One Piece due to the frequent breaks, the story of the lovable hunter Gon searching for his long-lost father has solidified itself as one of the best shounen, even with the story still unfinished.
With rich worldbuilding, memorable characters, and masterfully crafted arcs that explore complex moral themes, Hunter x Hunter is definitely one of the best anime out there.
2. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood nails everything, ranging from badass action through real emotional punches to deep, thoughtful stuff, without ever feeling heavy. If there is a king of storytelling done right, this series easily takes the crown. The Elric brothers’ journey is filled with moral dilemmas and personal growth, set against a richly developed world. It strikes that sweet spot between laughs and serious moments, so youโre never bored.
Gintama is one of a kind. Itโs stupidly funny one minute and then hits you with emotional gut-punches the next. It somehow juggles parody, chaos, and legit powerful storytelling without ever losing its heart.
The show is set in an alternate Edo period where aliens have invaded Earth, and samurai Gintoki Sakata takes on odd jobs with his friends to make ends meet, leading to hilarious and action-packed adventures.
4. Code Geass
Code Geass is one of those anime that really makes you think about everything, from morality to the choices the characters make. The idea of the MC getting the power to control people with his eyes sounds crazy at first, but itโs how the show digs into the actual consequences of that power that sets it apart. Loved by many, itโs not just about epic battles or awesome mecha action; itโs about strategy, scheming, and the gray area between good and bad.
The story is set in an alternate future where the Holy Britannian Empire has conquered Japan. Exiled prince Lelouch vi Britannia gains Geass, a power that lets him control anyone with his gaze, and uses it to lead a revolution as the masked vigilante Zero.
5. Made in Abyss
Made in Abyss looks super cute at first. The characters have that almost chibi-like art style, and it all seems kinda whimsical. But donโt let that fool you. Not only does it get dark quickly, but it also gets sad just as fast. The anime somehow mixes breathtaking, otherworldly beauty with some seriously gruesome moments, so you’re constantly torn between “wow” and “oh no.”
Set in a world where a massive, mysterious pit called the Abyss stretches deep into the earth, the story follows a brave girl named Riko who dreams of becoming a legendary Cave Raider like her mother. When she meets a strange robot boy named Reg, the two set off on a dangerous journey into the depths.
6. Attack on Titan
In a world besieged by giant humanoid creatures known as Titans, humanity’s remnants reside within massive walled cities. After a colossal Titan breaches the outer wall, young Eren Yeager vows to eradicate every Titan, joining the military to fight back.
Attack on Titan is the kind of series you show your friend when they say anime is just for kids. With its intense storyline and exploration of mature themes like freedom, oppression, and the human condition, it quickly proves otherwise. Not to mention, it has one of the best plot twists in anime history.
7. Samurai Champloo
Samurai Champloo is about samurai and katana fights. Do I really have to say more?
A mixture of both the past and present, its story is packed full of fillers, and thatโs what made Samurai Champloo so great. Its journey, not necessarily the destination. The destination was great too, but the show does so much more than it needed to. Normally, mixing so many things into a plot could be bad, but Samurai Champloo does it wonderfully. And the traveling companions are like water and oil.
Itโs a show for everyone. Thereโs plenty of great sword-slashing action, clever comedy, and a good share of moments that will tug at your heartstrings, often all at once.
8. Spy x Family
In Spy x Family, we meet Loid Forger, a top-tier spy who builds a fake family for a mission. He marries Yor, a kind woman whoโs secretly an assassin, and adopts Anya, a telepathic girl who knows the truth but just wants a real family.
None of them know each otherโs real identity (except Anya), and her reactions are comedy gold.
Spy x Family is universally loved by most people fortunate enough to come across it, and itโs not hard to see why. It’s funny, wholesome, stylish, and easy to get into, even if you donโt usually watch anime. It doesnโt rely on heavy lore, weird tropes, or anything confusing. Moreover, its English dub is surprisingly good.
9. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba
Among the newer anime, Demon Slayer (2019) stole the spotlight, and honestly, my heart too, with its gorgeous animation and emotional storytelling. The main guy might seem like your typical shounen hero at first, but that doesnโt take away from how beautifully built the world is or how powerful his journey feels. Itโs packed with action, but it also hits hard emotionally in a way you donโt always expect.
In this anime, after demons slaughter his family and turn his sister Nezuko into one, Tanjiro Kamado joins the Demon Slayer Corps to avenge his family and find a cure for Nezuko.
10. March Comes in Like a Lion
The animation and soundtrack in this anime are amazing. It’s one of those series that is much more than it appears on the surface, with plenty of layers and depth.
March Comes in Like a Lion follows Rei Kiriyama, a young boy who loses his parents and sister in an accident. He is left to live with a family friend, where things take a darker turn, leading him to become a professional shogi player.
March Comes in Like a Lion is a powerful coming-of-age story about overcoming depression, and it really helped me understand myself a bit more. It even got me to try my hand at shogi, though Iโm no Rei Kiriyama!
11. Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is a unique anime that really felt realistic to me. We watched our characters go from 0 to not a 100, but they did get a bit better. With each of their interactions and the plot, I noticed this. I really felt like these were characters I would love to laugh, cry, and go on adventures with.
With a great story, characters, art, and sound, it really is a shame it was only 12 episodes. Iโm still waiting patiently for a second season. Until then, I still go back now and then to watch the 12 episodes we have so far. With its large main cast, it was still able to balance between the group and the individuals, and thatโs a very hard task to carry out.
12. 86
In a dystopian future, the Republic of San Magnolia claims to be fighting a war with drones, but the truth is that the oppressed โ86โ are forced to pilot mechs. The story follows Lena, a handler from the Republic, and Shin, a battle-hardened 86 soldier, as they slowly form a bond across the divide.
86 (2021)is one of the best newer anime out there, and fans are eagerly waiting for season 2 to be announced. While the description sounds bleak, 86 isn’t just grim; it has some genuinely beautiful, hopeful, and even tender moments that hit even harder because of all the darkness around them.
13. Kamisama Kiss
Nanami is a high school girl whoโs down on her luck. Her dad ditches her, sheโs broke, and she ends up homeless. But then she saves a weird guy from a dog, and heโs like, โHey, you can have my house.โ Totally normal… except that โhouseโ turns out to be a shrine, and suddenly sheโs a land god living with a grumpy yet handsome fox familiar.
Kamisama Kiss is sweet and funny, and it has actual relationship development. Not just endless flirting with no payoff. Those who like a sprinkle of fantasy, a sprinkle of mischief, and a whole lot of heart, Kamisama Kiss finely hits the spot.
14. KonoSuba
God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! is very good too. It may look like any other RPG harem, but it is so much more than that.
Itโs not a show trying to teach you any life lessons; itโs just a show full of entertainment, hilarious moments, and lightheartedness.
Hereโs another lesser-known anime that Rai (from Raiโs Anime Blog) and I talked about recently. It features a cross-dressing male character and a young otaku surrounded by her fellow otaku friends.

16. Fruits Basket
Iโve always loved both the Fruits Basket manga and the original 2001 anime, even though there were some differences. A heartwarming story, the series follows a girl who becomes entangled with a family cursed to transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac.
The 2019 remake takes things up a notch. It follows the manga much more closely, and you can tell that Natsuki Takaya was more involved this time around.
17. Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou
Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou is a great shoujo to watch that doesn’t seem rushed, especially with just 12 episodes.
The art and sound were amazing, and the characters were all so lovely and quirky (but in a good way). I really think everyone will see a bit of themselves in one of the characters.
My joy for this anime surprised me because I usually find romance anime not really my thing, but the love in this anime felt really believable and puts a spin on the usual boy meets girl, boy confesses his feelings, and they share a kiss. But it was different this time; the comedy and great characters really bring the story to life and make you love every moment of the anime.
18. Inuyasha
Of course, Inuyasha is my favorite. It was my first real anime, and I quickly fell in love with the story and the adorable hanyou (half-demon, half-human).
Now, Fairy Tail is one of those mainstream anime that you either love or hate. Personally, I loved the artwork and the many plotlines that kept things exciting. I canโt even count how many times I bawled my eyes out while watching this show.
Family and friendship are things everyone connects with, and theyโre at the heart of a lot of shounen, with Fairy Tail being no exception. Itโs exactly that bond between the fleshed-out characters that makes this series so great. Fairy Tail is one of those series I always recommend for newcomers since it’s easy to follow, filled with epic fights, goofy banter, and a wholesome theme.
20. Shugo Chara
Not many people know about this one, but I absolutely love it. As a kid, I related to it so much. It even gave me the courage to embrace being the “weird anime kid” in school and helped me feel less alone.
The artwork might be a bit odd (especially the eyes), but that doesnโt stop me from loving it. Itโll always hold a special place in my heart.

When life feels heavy, these girlsโ embrace of quiet joys is just what you need to lift your mood. Plus, youโll get a new love for the outdoors!
14. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.
Saiki K. is the comedy you never knew you needed. Saiki, a high school student with psychic powers, just wants to live a normal life, but his crazy classmates and insane situations keep getting in the way.
This anime is non-stop humor with a protagonist who’s ridiculously OP but just wants peace and quiet. The sheer randomness of his life will have you laughing in no time, making it the perfect anime for when you just need to escape and enjoy something completely absurd.
13. Kaguya-sama: Love is War
Kaguya-sama: Love is War is one of those romantic comedies that will literally have you laughing out loud. Itโs about two high school geniuses, Kaguya and Miyuki, who are in love with each other but are too stubborn to confess. Instead, they engage in hilarious mind games to try and get the other to admit their feelings first.
The back-and-forth between them is both adorable and ridiculous, and itโll have you grinning from ear to ear. No heavy drama here, just pure comedic gold.
12. Lucky Star
If youโre ever in need of pure, silly fun, Lucky Star is where itโs at. This slice-of-life anime follows a group of high school girls just living their everyday lives. The jokes are quirky, the characters are hilarious, and itโs totally carefree.
From ridiculous moments about food to totally random discussions, itโll definitely lift your spirits without asking for too much emotional investment. Itโs the kind of anime that reminds you how simple and silly life can be when you donโt sweat the small stuff.
11. One Punch Man
Sometimes, when life feels tough, you just need a superhero whoโs chill and absolutely overpowered. Enter One Punch Man, where Saitama, the hero, can defeat any villain with a single punch. Sounds ridiculous, right? And it is, in the best way!
Watching Saitama casually save the day while being bored out of his mind will make you laugh and give you that needed boost. Itโs fun, light, and packed with epic fights, but itโs also a reminder that not everything in life has to be taken so seriously.
10. K-On!
This anime is like a big, warm hug. No drama, no life-or-death plotsโjust a bunch of high school girls forming a band and eating cake in the clubroom a lot. Yui, the clumsy guitarist, is so adorable that you canโt help but smile.
Every episode is basically a serotonin booster, and if you’re feeling down, itโs the kind of light-hearted chaos you need. Music, friendship, and fluffy vibes all the way. 10/10 comfort anime, no notes.
9. My Ordinary Life
My Ordinary Life might have “ordinary” in the title, but it’s anything but ordinary. Itโs completely random, like laugh-so-hard-you-cry kind of random. One second thereโs a girl wrestling a deer, the next, a principal is flying through the air. The deadpan humor mixed with insane situations just works.
The show follows the daily antics of three high school friendsโYลซko Aioi, Mio Naganohara, and Mai Minakamiโand their interactions with an eight-year-old genius inventor, her robot caretaker, and a talking cat.
If youโre ever crying on the floor and need a reason to laugh again, this anime will totally pull you up. Trust me, itโs a mood.
8. Barakamon
Ughhh, this one hit me right in the soul. It’s about a grumpy calligrapher who escapes city life and ends up on a quiet island with a bunch of chaotic localsโincluding the most adorable little girl, Naru, who basically steals the show.
Barakamon is one of those shows that just feels calming. Itโs got plenty of funny moments, but it also hits you with some meaningful lessons about life and growth. Itโs the kind of anime that makes you smile and think at the same time.
7. My Roommate is a Cat
This oneโs for all my introvert-anxiety besties. The main guy loses his parents and suddenly ends up living with a stray cat named Haru. What makes this anime super special is that you get to hear both the humanโs and the catโs perspective. In fact, it’s the simple moments they share that are so uplifting.
All in all, itโs sweet, quiet, and sometimes emotional, but in the best way. Perfect for rainy days and curling up with a blanket (and maybe your own cat ๐พ).
6. Komi Canโt Communicate
Komi is the shy queen of our dreams. She literally canโt talk to anyone and yet somehow ends up becoming the schoolโs most admired girl. Watching her slowly open up and make friends is so wholesome that it hurts. Not to mention, while it tackles serious themes, it still maintains a funny and lighthearted tone with a major feel-good energy.
The art is beautiful, the humor is on point, and the whole thing just makes you root for her so hard.
5. InuYasha
InuYasha was the first real anime and manga series that I read. I quickly fell in love with the characters from feudal and modern Japan. It follows Kagome, a human girl, who is transported to feudal Japan, where she meets Inuyasha, a half-demon trapped by a sacred arrow. Together, they search for the shattered pieces of the Shikon no Tama, a jewel that grants wishes, while battling enemies and making new friends along the way.
This is a great anime series if you want something cute with a bit of the older Sailor Moon type of feel. Itโs nostalgic, and the romance and laughter will keep you smiling for a while. Not to mention, it inspired so many great fanfictions!
4. Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir
I just discovered this anime last year when I was going through anime music videos. Depression had hit me hard, and I decided to give this anime a chance. By the first episode, I was hooked! And I do mean, soul-consuming, forget everything else hooked.
In this show, Marinette and Adrien, armed with magical Miraculous jewels, transform into Ladybug and Chat Noir to protect Paris from akumas sent by the villain Hawkmoth, all while keeping their identities a secret.
This anime is just super cute. The second season was just released, and Iโm still hopelessly waiting for the next episode. The best(and most frustrating) part of the show is that Marinette is in love with Adrien, Adrien is in love with Ladybug, and Chat Noir loves Ladybug. Theyโre basically in love with each other, and itโs adorable and laugh-out-loud funny. Not to mention, itโll make you throw your pillows at the tv screen.
3. Shugo Chara
Shugo Chara was one of the first anime I watched in high school. The story centers around Amu Hinamori, an elementary school girl with a “cool and spicy” exterior, who wishes for the courage to be her true self. The next morning, she discovers three colorful eggs that hatch into Guardian Characters: Ran, Miki, and Su.
Amuโs Guardian Characters help her discover her true self and fulfill her dreams. As she struggles with her “would-be” selves, Amu learns to “chara-nari” (character transform) or “character change” for special powers, both offensive and practical. Eventually, Amu is recruited as the “Joker” to search for X Eggs and X Characters, corrupted forms of people’s dreams, which the Guardians aim to purify.
Shugo Chara will give you all the feels and remind you of what it was like to be a child againโbefore depression took over, when you still knew what you wanted to do and who you wanted to be in life.
2. Himouto! Umaru Chan
Iโm sure youโve already seen the pictures for this one. Basically, Umaru Doma is considered the perfect person, but once sheโs home, she turns into a lazy, selfish chibi character that just games and watches anime all day while eating snacks and drinking cola. Honestly, she sounds exactly like me!
So, if you ever feel like you’re overwhelmed with adult responsibilities, watching Umaru embrace her lazy side without any worries is sure to bring a smile to your face.
1. Ouran High School Host Club
I just HAD to include Ouran High on this list. When I first watched this, it captured my attention quickly. Basically, Haruhi Fujioka goes to Ouran High on scholarships while most everyone else is just a rich kid that goes. She goes into Music Room 3 and accidentally breaks a vase in front of the eccentric members she meets there, and they make her work it off as their errand boy. I say, boy, because, since she has a tomboyish figure and short hair, they mistake her as a male instead of a female at first.
Most of us have already heard of anime shows like Naruto,Bleach, and One Piece. They’re classics and highly talked about. But there are some anime shows that don’t get as much hype but deserve so much more. Let’s show a little love to some of these super awesome yet underrated anime shows and give them the love they deserve!
1. DNAngel

I think I read the manga for this one before I saw the anime. It was super cute, though. I rewatched this a couple of times and still love the story. It’s simple, but that’s one of the reasons that makes it so amazing. It touches your heart and reminds you of a simpler time.
The MC, Daisuke, is an angel stealing artwork in hopes of preventing world destruction, if you put it in very simple terms.
Fun fact: Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric, Tamaki Suoh, Zero Kiryu) does the English opening song, and it’s truly beautiful!
2. Devils Line

Genres: Action, Romance, Supernatural
I’ve done a couple of reviews of this anime already. I haven’t seen a ton of fans talking about it, hence, I would say it’s a pretty underrated anime. In fact, if you search for it, you might get a couple of images, but there’s a lot of mature content mixed in with some sketchy stuff. If you do go looking for it, make sure to add anime after it, or it could lead to some pretty dark places.
So far, I’m really enjoying this story. Vampires live alongside humans but have to be super careful because they are stronger and can easily hurt humans. They can also go into a frenzy and will kill if they see blood. Naturally, there is discrimination against them and harsh laws restricting their lifestyles because they are considered dangerous, and it is very easy for them to lose control.
Despite that, the vampires are essentially humans underneath. Most just want to live their lives, go to work, fall in love, and not be hated by everyone.
3. Full Moon o Sagashite

This is another super awesome yet underrated anime. Even though it is different compared to the mang, I still loved it. It was one of my first OTP’s and ships and I cried through both the anime and the manga.
We follow Mitsuki Kouyama, a young girl with throat cancer, who dreams of becoming a professional singer and reaching her friend Eichi, who moved to America. When two shinigami reveal she only has a year left to live, Mitsuki decides to chase her dream with their help, despite the risks.
4. Orb: On the Movements of the Earth
Aired: October 5, 2024 โ March 15, 2025โ
Studio: Madhouseโ
Genres: Historical, Mystery, Science Fiction
Orb: On the Movements of the Earth is a historical drama set in a time when science and philosophy were still forming. It follows a young boy named Orb, who becomes fascinated by the movement of the Earth and the universe. He embarks on a journey to discover the truths of the world, struggling to balance his personal beliefs with the teachings around him.
Honestly, I loved how slow and thoughtful the story was. It felt almost meditative, like it gave me space to reflect on my own perspectives. The animation was super unique and elegant, though there were a few moments where it was a bit tricky to follow. The character development was really subtle, which I appreciated. Also, Orbโs growth wasnโt rushed at all. Itโs definitely not a show for everyone, but it has this quiet charm that I really connected with!
5. Slam Dunk
Aired: October 16, 1993 โ March 23, 1996โ

Genres: Comedy, Sports, Drama
Slam Dunk is a classic sports anime that follows Hanamichi Sakuragi, a high school delinquent who gets roped into playing basketball to impress a girl. He starts off clueless and clumsy, but over time, he discovers a love for the sport and works hard to improve his skills.
I absolutely loved Slam Dunk. The humor was spot-on, and the character development was amazing. Hanamichiโs awkwardness and sheer determination made him super relatable and I found myself getting way more invested in the games than I expected.
What I loved the most was how Slam Dunk balanced comedy and drama. It never took itself too seriously, but it still hit you with some really emotional moments. Itโs one of those feel-good anime that just makes you want to root for the underdog, and honestly, I was cheering for Hanamichi and his team from start to finish!
6. Space Brothers
Aired: April 1, 2012 โ December 28, 2014
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Genres: Drama, Sci-Fi, Slice of Life
Space Brothers tells the story of two brothers, Hibito and Mutta, who share a childhood dream of becoming astronauts. While Hibito achieves his goal and lands on the moon, Mutta struggles with setbacks and self-doubt, but his determination keeps him pushing forward.
Warning: this show will definitely hit you right in the feels. Itโs not just about space missionsโitโs also about the personal growth of the characters. Watching Muttaโs journey was like following a real person, someone who isnโt perfect but gives it their all.
The pacing was great, and even though there were slow moments, they always built up to something meaningful.
Mononoke is one of those shows that stands out for its creativity. The narrative style is pretty unconventional, and it forces you to think deeply about the themes of regret, guilt, and human nature. Too bad itโs still one of the most underrated psychological anime, despite airing all the way back in 2007.
I was totally blown away by how the art and animation matched the eerie, unsettling vibe of the storyโit’s unlike anything I’ve seen before. Itโs definitely not an easy watch, but the complexity and boldness of it all make it so worth it.
The series follows the Medicine Seller, a mysterious traveler who hunts down evil spirits called mononoke. But hereโs the twist: to defeat them, he has to figure out their mononokeโbasically the key to their power, which is tied to their Form, Truth, and Regret.
8. Medalist
Aired: January 5, 2025 โ Mar 30, 2025

Genres: Sports, Drama, Slice of Lifeโ
Medalist follows the journey of a young figure skater named Maru, who, after a series of unfortunate events, is determined to make a name for herself in the competitive world of figure skating.
I have to admit, I didnโt expect to get so emotionally invested in Medalist. The way it explores the pressures of competitive sports really hit home for me, and Maruโs perseverance through hardship was inspiring. The skating sequences were beautifully animated, capturing the elegance and intensity of the sport.
For those who like stories about pushing through adversity with a lot of heart, Medalist is a must-watch!
9. Girls Band Cry

Genres: Drama, Music
Another underrated and niche anime is Girls Band Cry. The show centers around a group of high school girls who form a rock band to cope with their personal struggles and express their emotions through music.
Even though I am not into musical anime, I unexpectedly enjoyed it. In this case, the music really helped set the tone for the emotional moments. The characters are relatable and authentic, so connecting to their personal journeys was fairly easy. All in all, I found myself rooting for them to find their way and overcome their struggles.
10. Cross Game
Aired: April 5, 2009 โ March 28, 2010โ
Studio: SynergySPโ
Genres: Coming-of-age, Romantic Comedy, Sports
Just by looking at the key visual, you might think that Cross Game is just another straightforward sports anime. But youโd be wrong! Cross Game skillfully combines sports with deep emotional moments, resulting in a heartfelt story with a blend of sports action and relatable characters who struggle, make mistakes, and also grow along the way.
Cross Game follows the life of Kou, a talented baseball player who is struggling with the sudden death of his childhood friend, Wakaba. As he deals with grief, family pressures, and the game he loves, he finds unexpected support from her younger sister, Aoba, whoโs also passionate about baseball.

Parasyte…”What makes a human? What makes a monster? Each of us has a bit of both in us, and it’s up to you which one you want to be“.
I got bored one weekend and decided that I needed to binge-watch an anime that isn’t my typical type. Parasyte or Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu was one of those anime shows I’ve completed in a day. I would have beenย dying to wait for each episode each week if I watched this when it aired. Now, normally, I would go for the classic romance anime or a slice-of-life but I’ve been trying to branch out and watch other genres…which lead me to this horror anime.
Parasyte: The Maxim (Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu)
When speaking with others online about Parasyte, the most common piece of criticism I hear that keeps people away and those who don’t want to watch is that it’s “not my genre,” it’s “overrated” or “it makes my stomach turn while watching some scenes.” And I agree with two of those things. The first few seconds of ParasyteALMOST had me turning it off and putting on something else. But I don’t agree that it’s overrated. If you like shows like Deadman Wonderland or the non-animated show Squid Game, you’ll probably like this one. It has a morbidly curious inflection on it that makes you want to watch more. I enjoyed both Deadman Wonderland and Squid Game so, despite the gore, I did like the anime.
So…what’s Parasyte actually about? Well, we have a case of alien invasion by mysterious beings who can infect us through parasitic means. No big deal right? Ha, wrong. By inserting themselves into a humanโs brain, the parasites can take full control and transform you into a monster, even SPLITTING your head open. Sounds terrifying right? That would have been the fate for our main character named Shinichi until one parasite goofs up and fails his mission. Now they share a single body but with separate personalities. Because of course, they do and I doubt the show would have been as interesting if they would have just kept it at that. Well, okay, maybe it would still have been interesting but I like this direction more.
Anyway! The show decided to have a plot twist and have the organism develop its own intellect in Shinichi’s right arm and is named Migi (which is Japanese for right and is the same voice actress as Lucy from Fairy Tail).
What makes this seriesโ story stand out quite a bit is that it shows the best and worst of what humans can do while also balancing out how parasites can behave. The parasites don’t just kill without a second thought (though there are a lot who certainly do) but also help the human race. I think it does show that there are good and bad parasites just like there are good and bad humans. It’s just like the quote I put in the beginningโฆwe CHOOSE which we’re going to be.
Back to the story…ahem
Shinichi develops quite a bit throughout this show. And not just in his glow up where he Neville Longbottomed us. Shinichi’s experience of fighting alongside Migi turns him into a warrior beyond someone who just wishes to protect others. His change is reflected physically and also at an interpersonal level as he becomes less and less human himself. From an ordinary kid with a timid personality, in the beginning, Shinchi becomes a changed man who is serious, humorless, and pessimistic.
Also, be aware that the show has tragedy. More than just all the death, Shinchiโs losses in life expands beyond just losing important people around him. It shows that he canโt save everyone. While I hate that it does that (I always want the happy ending) I find it a good thing that the show does do this. It gives it a bit of realism, even being such a sad truth of life. We CAN’T save everyone and there is so much darkness and evil in our world.
Itโs interesting at the same time to see how much Migi changes. I enjoyed Migi as a sidekick/other main character and seeing him develop a softer side, which was the total opposite of what he shows in the beginning.
On a lighter side, the show also adds some elements of comedy involving Migi and Shinchiโs relationship. Migiโs particular curiosity leads him to โresearchโ on human sexuality which creates hilariously memorable moments. By presenting such events, it also shows that not all parasites are simply absent-minded for their lust to consume and kill.
While the transition of each episode remains mainly strong, there are some minor changes between the manga and this adaptation. Sadly, both the manga and anime have plot holes that are seemingly never answered. None of which destroys the content of the story but some of it seems a bit odd such as the technology and Shinchiโs original appearance before his blow-up transformation.
But there is some other good things in Parasyte!
There is still some romance in the show that I particularly like. I don’t think I can watch almost any if there isn’t a love interest and Parasyte doesn’t disappoint with that.
His relationships with Murano often have shifting drifts because of the dangers he realizes she may be in if she gets too close to him. Classic and typical hero complex that shows up in anime, but it does add another layer to the show. But I do find it interesting and definitely ship them together.
Overall Parasyte was a great anime to watch. If you’re looking for something that’s out of your comfort zone or just looking for something new to watch, I would recommend this. I promise you that after the first episode, the cliffhangers will reel you in and possibly cause you to watch episode after episode until you’re done. It was good for an afternoon of binge-watching but I did have to put on a slice of life comedy anime afterward.

Inuyashiki is perfect for Halloween this year…if you’re a fan of morbid things and want to be scarred for life. It really depends on the type of anime you like and prefer to watch.
Since it’s October, I wanted to do a review for an anime that encompassed so many dark and creepy things for Halloween. A good spook (bonus points if you know where that’s from).

Yup, that’s a direct quote from the anime. We already know that anime is…strange. It can cover a variety of niches and everyone can find a genre that they prefer. Inuyashiki is one of those specific types of anime shows that you watch if you prefer gore, horror, psychological torture, and the like. I made myself watch this anime in the name of wanting to do a review of a creepy anime in time for Halloween. Though I love creepy things like the paranormal and serial killers, this anime was hard to watch.

Inuyashiki Ichirou is our main character and protagonist. Aside from looking much older than he actually is, his entire family resents him, for seemingly no reason. He has no affection for his wife, as they sleep in different rooms of the house, and his children also give him no time of day at all. To make matters worse, Inuyashiki receives unfortunate news that he has got terminal cancer, and, feeling that he canโt tell anybody about this, keeps it to himself, suffering in silence all the more than before. After a trip to the park to cry alone, suddenly, ALIENS!
For no reason, and without any explanation at all, aliens accidentally kill both Inuyashiki and a man standing next to him, our main antagonist for this tale, Hiro (who just so happens to be standing next to him for some reason, but whatever).
Realizing their mistake, the aliens then rebuild both men, turning them into cyborgs in the process. Because, obviously, that’s just what you do. Also, if you think that the show will delve more into the aliens and why this all happened, prepare to be disappointed. It just happens and no explanation is given. Because well… anime.
Two Very Different Main Characters
Our main characters are vastly different and show themselves to clearly be the protagonist and antagonist. Ichiro is portrayed as a timid old man who has a hard time making friends. However, itโs shown that he has a heart of gold and works to help others. On the other hand, thereโs Hiro. To put it simply, this guy is a sociopath that kills people. He appears to be kind and respectful but, throughout the show, itโs easy to see that he has a God-like complex of himself. He uses his powers to kill others simply for the thrill and because he can. He rivals Richard Ramirez and other notorious serial killers in my opinion, though in anime form.
Honestly, I think Hiro represents the worst of humanity. Through his killings, Hiro confesses that he โnever felt so aliveโ while he does so. In other words, Hiro kills with little reason besides to feel. I really hate his character and the fact that they spend SEVEN episodes of him killing people.

The killing of children comes across as rather tasteless and a pathetic attempt to seem edgier than it actually is; itโs essentially a shock factor, which reminded me a lot of Elfen Lied, albeit nowhere near as extreme as that show or Parasyte that showed a head being cut off. A lot of blood and gore, all for the sake of shock value.
People Just Idolize Hiro Because He’s “Hot” and it makes me barf
Okay, letโs first discuss a side character named Shion, who, after the news is revealed that Hiro is a murderer, and is thus on the run from the police, allows Hiro to stay with her and her Grandmother in her house as a means of protecting and hiding him since she doesnโt believe “he would do such a thing”. But, this makes no sense as there is no reason for Shion to believe that he isnโt a murderer as she knows nothing about him! To her, he is just a fellow classmate, and the only interaction that she has ever had with him was one case where she asked for Hiro to go out with her, confessing her feelings in the process, where he said, โThanksโ and walked away. So?
There is nothing to suggest otherwise that he is not the killer!
It always annoyed me how naรฏve she was in letting, essentially what is a stranger, inside her home. This isn’t the 60s/70s where serial killers were at an all-time high because people just let absolute strangers into their homes.
Oh, one final thing I want to rant about really quick is how each woman in the show, most particularly teenage girls, refer to Hiro as being โhotโ or โcoolโ so much so that there have been several fan groups made about him, and when one girl, during the massacre of 100 people sees Hiro appear on her phone, she blushes and acts like a dumbass instead of being fearful for her life! Why is Hiro being idolized?
This is the guy who murdered babies for crying out loud! While the show does too seem to question this, as evident by a couple of police officers who are discussing this same fact, this part always bugged me, and I groaned to myself whenever a girl would comment about how โhotโ Hiro was.
That final battle lasts 10 minutes.
10 episodes in and we finally have a battle between Hiro (who is NOT a Hero) and Ichirou, with 2 Episodes introducing each character and 7 episodes of the Antagonist killing people. This was too much for me but after each episode, I would watch Disney or a fluffy cartoon to help.
Maybe I am asking too much from an 11 episode series, but I was expecting more of a final battle. I figured there would be more and then out of nowhere the climactic battle between the two is over in a couple of minutes. The battle was lacking as well. They both get knocked out, go into Robo combat mode, and Inuyashiki just wins. We’ve been building up the assumption that Hiro is far more in control of his robotic body but then Inuyashiki doesn’t have any trouble whatsoever defeating him.
While both Hiro and Ichiro uses violence, they use it for completely different reasons. While Hiro feels alive through killing, Ichiro feels alive through saving others.
Psychopaths exist and so do heroes. You probably hear about them on the news every day. However, Hiro makes the news for the wrong reasons and it becomes clear that he wants to experiment with his powers and show off his God complex. While this all seems like nonsensational drama, it does actually does work as the show is able to use its violence to full effect.
From the police massacre to the destruction of aircrafts, it gives his insight on what Hiro is truly capable of and how far he goes to prove his point. My experience from this show made me realize that Hiro and Ichiro really show what humans are capable of when they are given powers beyond the natural law of order.
All in all, this anime was hard to watch. If you want something creepy and gory to watch for Halloween that’s anime-related and not just Texas Chain Saw Massacre, this anime will be for you. But be warned though, it can be triggering for people who don’t like seeing children be harmed or gallons of blood.

Plot Summary
Shuichi Kagaya isnโt human. He has an unnatural sense of smell and can transform into an incredibly powerful beast… of sorts. He does all he can to avoid standing out and being discovered, but no good deed goes unpunished, and his decision to use his power to save a girl spells the end of his quiet life.
What did I think?
Gleipnir is an anime that seems to borrow from Norse mythology, with an Alien that acts like the trickster Loki and a boy that turns into a wolf-like mascot outfit, who has been subdued mentally to forget his past and if he ever does break free from these shackles and remembers will be the beginning of the end.
Gleipnir meaning โthe open oneโ is an anime about monsters, human desire, unity and interpersonal relationships. Gleipnir is definitely not your ordinary anime, offering some fresh experiences in how it explores many deep issues about young adult minds.
STORY
Gleipnir has a lot of crazy, unique and exciting things to offer. It is relatively short, which makes it easy for anyone to pick up and watch without worrying about having to catch up on 100+ episodes.
Its an anime with a very slow unravelling plot that leaves more unanswered mysteries than answered mysteries. And dialogue that can be considered confusing and unrealistic sometimes. Gleipnir continuous fanservice halfway through the series also felt unnecessary at certain scenes.
But some of Gleipnir faults might be from the herculean task of trying to fit so much of the plot into 13 episodes. Gleipnir is a dark gory story that can be seen as a coming-of-age story as our protagonists Clair Aoki and Shuichi Kagaya, start to come to terms with their traumas and desires.
Gleipnir plot is unique, with battle royale elements and an interesting building theme on the weight of oneโs own sins. It can be very convoluted the first four episodes, with the way it throws a lot of themes at you at once but it does start to settle down.
CHARACTER
The two protagonists are our classic red and blue ogre, yin and yang protagonist pairing. Separately Clair and Shuichi will have ended up being meh characters but together they balance each otherโs personalities out and help us learn a little bit more about themselves in each episode. It was interesting to watch both characters development and see them trying to find that middle ground.
Other characters sometimes felt one-dimensional or like afterthoughts kept to fill the world of Gleipnir. But even though they didnโt feel fully fleshed-out, characters were complex, with flaws and reasons that explained why they acted the way they did. And made it feel strangely like it was done intentionally to make you feel like you were meeting actual strangers that if you got to see more of, learnt more about but if you didn’t really, wouldn’t know anything about them.
Animation
The animation quality was really great. Characters, transformations, choreographed battles and scenes seemed to have more depth to them. Even little things like characters changing clothes or moving from point A to B was actually well animated and thought of. Gleipnir art is really pleasing to the eyes especially during its moments of calm and less dark and brutal moments.
Sound
Gleipnir music can be wonderful at times, helping complement the narration, thrill and mystery. I especially noticed how it helped set the mood for some fights and made them feel more fleshed-out than they were.
Episode 7of Gleipnir. We got to see another side of Shuuichi and get an idea of how powerful he and Clair could be. It was another side of him I would like to see more of next season.
Least favourite moment?
Episode 12of Gleipnir. Gleipnir didn’t pull the punches in this episode, it was completely dark and brutal. No one should ever feel unloved or unwanted.
Favourite character?
Madoka
He is a character that I can relate with to some point, he is socially awkward, not necessarily good at anything but still trying his best and failing a lot and heโs pretty much an underdog. He acts tough but heโs someone that cares deeply for every member of his gang and will never abandon them. Madoka wants power not for himself alone but to be able to take care of the people he cares about, which is admirable and sweet.
Least favourite character?
Madoka

Even though I like him, heโs definitely not perfect he is completely crazy. Madokaโs heart might be in the right place but he was passing his suffering on to others. Which makes all the good he wants to do void.
What did I learn?
What I learnt from Gleipnir;
Never ever jump to conclusions.
No one deserves to feel unloved, unwanted or easily replaceable.
โEvil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.โ – Othinus.
Everyone needs to be supported no matter how strong they look on the outside.
How we treat people matters.
Would I watch more?
Overall, Gleipnir is an anime with an interesting enough premise, that throws a lot of themes at its viewers and the potential to be dark and creepy. The series tries to work with too much at once but in the end, Gleipnir really started to shine. I would definitely like to watch another season to see where the story goes from where we were left.
Gleipnir is watchable, but donโt expect to be completely swept off your feet with this first season.
When is Gleipnir Season 2 Release Date?
As of now, there is no official release date mentioned from any of the staff or studio. But, if we were to speculate, with the success of season 1 then we expect Gleipnir to be released in 2021, fall, or summer 2022.

Don’t you think a girl who drools when she falls asleep is cute? It sounds a bit weird and kinky. These were the first words I saw from Mysterious Girlfriend X, and what caught my attention. So I bookmarked it, till I finally decided to read it this last month.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is a romance manga that’s different from your usual boy-meets-girl troupe, with love triangles and grand public declarations of undying love. And it’s more than just drool.

Mysterious Girlfriend X is a refreshingly down to earth take on the romance genre; they get flustered by their firsts (like holding hands, sharing an indirect kiss through a drink), wonder or worry about their partner’s feelings and slowly find their pace as couples.
Dating has a teenage can be awkward, you don’t overnight know how to interact with the opposite sex, or handle relationships. You trudge through it, acting on impulses you might not be completely comfortable with, acting on the knowledge you have available from yourself and friends, etc. Mysterious Girlfriend X is all about exploring that space, with observation and sometimes legitimately strange shenanigans.

Summary
One day, a strange transfer student appears in Tsubaki’s class. Urabe Mikoto is an antisocial girl, whose hobby is just sleeping during class-breaks, carrying around scissors in her panties (which she can use to cut through anything) and on one occasion randomly bursting into laughter during class. One day, after school Tsubaki goes to wake up a napping Urabe and ends up tasting her drool… And a connection between Tsubaki and Urabe begins. A bond made on drool!
Relationships are complicated but with one made on drool, there’s no way of knowing what might happen.
What did I think?
Mysterious Girlfriend X can definitely be filed under some of the weirdest manga I have read. But I really enjoyed my time reading this manga by Riichi Ueshiba.
The exchange of magical telepathic drool from boy to girl, girl to boy and girl to girl for some reason really didn’t bother me like I have heard people complain about. Yes it’s a bit strange but I also liked how quirky it was about the whole scenario Mysterious Girlfriend X set up.
Mysterious Girlfriend X is not your typical romantic comedy. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, ecchi fest or overly serious. Riichi Ueshiba found just the right balance for Mysterious Girlfriend X that made the story and characters feel very somewhat grounded with just a dash of fantasy mystery.
Mysterious Girlfriend X rewarded me with an unusual experience for a romance manga. It was a completely mesmerizing play on the confusing, awkward way that love and sex blossom throughout the seemingly never-ending stage of adolescence and firsts.
STORY
Mysterious Girlfriend X by Riichi Ueshiba is definitely usual especially because of the drool thing but really how different is it from kissing, if anything there is less exchange of bodily fluids.
Mysterious Girlfriend X has fetish elements but also some very innocent fun that can be very tender and touching. And we get to see Tsubaki and Urabe take their relationship one step at a time with moments of anger, jealousy, and objectification. Really good, bad, and downright ugly that help them to grow together.
At its core it is a nostalgic story about falling in love and unnecessary early assumptions and epic fails so often made early on in relationships.
The manga builds off the romantic tension of the will-they-wonโt-they. And the plot works on the idea that the opposite gender is extremely mysterious and intimacy can be weird and awkward. So there is a lot of discovering of new feelings and understanding what each partner in a relationship wants one step at a time.
The mystical telepathic drool bond brings a magical element to the plot, helping share thoughts and emotions that helps our characters understand each other better.
Mysterious Girlfriend X story had a lot going for it that makes it a worthwhile read. But what I loved most about the whole story was reading about these two characters so intent on loving each other that they both work through all the problems to be content with one another.
ART
Mysterious Girlfriend X art style to me is kind of reminiscent of the 80โs or 90โs. The backgrounds are beautifully detailed and with the retro character design style (small black pupils, simple hair and a stocky, cartoon-like build).
And those parts where Tsubaki would have dreams were just so imaginative, I wish we had gotten more of that and got to see a lot more of the wacky dream world.
CHARACTER
I loved all the characters. They were unique and felt like real people, and weren’t just there to feel up space but they all served a purpose to the story. Some would appear temporary while others would stay throughout the story.
The character development between Tsubaki and Urabe was done beautifully where it was done in a realistic two-sided way.
All the characters were adorable and helped even make the magical and superhuman elements of the story feel acceptable.
Favourite moment?
My favourite moments from Mysterious Girlfriend X would have to be the ones with Tsubaki and Urabe. I love how Tsubaki can be so clueless sometimes or how Urabe acts so expressionless on the outside but she can actually be very sensitive.
We get to see she’s just a human being too, with her own wants, needs and her own insecurities.
The way she can always tell something is bothering him or how she can get him all flustered is really cute. And the way she can get all flustered herself is just so adorable.
Plus those moments when Urabe is so happy she smiles or literally gushes out drool is weird but adorable. Or when Tsubaki realizes what he did wrong and apologizes is great.
It was really nice and touching watching them grow as a couple, I was always in the Urabe and Tsubaki camp supporting them and hoping they stay together.
Hehe…
Least favourite moment?
Mysterious Girlfriend X chapter 28 to 34 and 58 to 59. Those chapters was a bit sad cause I felt sorry for Urabe and Tsubaki was being stupid. But those chapters really made them grow closer and makes me smile like a dirty old man.
Favourite character?
Ayuko Oka
Oka is Ueno’s (Tsubaki best friend) girlfriend and first friend of the unsocial and very reserved Urabe.
She’s a short, smart A student, good cook and as the mind of a dirty old man. She’s just so funny, devious and with her intelligence, she sometimes helps Urabe and Tsubaki develop and deepen their relationship.
Least favourite character?
Aika Hayakawa
Aika Hayakawa was Tsubaki’s classmate throughout junior high school, and also his first crush.
I don’t hate her but she’s not my favorite, she tries to steal Urabe’s Tsubaki. Hayakawa’s very relatable once we get to understand her. But she is still the enemy of the Tsubaki and Urabe camp. Plus her plan was so obvious I don’t know how Tsubaki couldn’t see through it. It was so annoying!
What I learnt?
Couples should always find their own pace in a relationship, confronting their feelings and dealing with them.
Never get too comfortable around your significant other that you still don’t appreciate the little things now and then.
And never ever make your partner cry. You have failed if you hurt them. This person picked you from the millions of other people on our planet.
Would you read more?
Yes Yes Yes Yes! I am glad I finally sat down and read Mysterious Girlfriend X (Nazo no Kanojo X) I found myself not being able to put it down, it was a wonderful manga.
I would recommend it for everyone who wants to read something funny and optimistic. It had a nice conclusion but I want more, I really fell in love with the characters especially Tsubaki and Urabe.
I would have like to be immersed more in the story of Tsubaki and Urabe, and maybe see them has adults with their kids. Their story was so grounded and realistic, it blew me away.

I have been made a fan of Trigger and I honestly look forward to whatever future creative work they release.

Hunter x Hunter is a well-animated and thought-out anime with plenty of action, with highly anticipated battles.
Hunter x Hunter is set in a world where Hunters exist to perform all manner of dangerous tasks like capturing criminals and bravely searching for lost treasures in uncharted territories. Twelve-year-old Gon Freecss is determined to become the best Hunter possible in hopes of finding his father, who was a Hunter himself and had long ago abandoned his young son. However, Gon soon realizes the path to achieving his goals is far more challenging than he could have ever imagined.
Along the way to becoming an official Hunter, Gon befriends the lively doctor-in-training Leorio, vengeful Kurapika, and rebellious ex-assassin Killua. To attain their own goals and desires, together the four of them take the Hunter Exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death. Throughout their journey, Gon and his friends embark on an adventure that puts them through many hardships and struggles. They will meet a plethora of monsters, creatures, and charactersโall while learning what being a Hunter truly means โMAL
Hunter x Hunter is an amazing action anime with a fantastic story, excellent characters with deep having their own goals and desires some simple while others complex. It’s one of those rear unicorns in the action genre that those a lot of things well. You will be glad you watched it.
23. One Punch Man

One Punch Man is the story of Satima, a hero who is a hero just for fun and the strongest man in his universe that can defeat any opponent with a single punch. Based on Yusuke Murata’s manga remake of ONE’s original webcomic.
The seemingly ordinary and unimpressive Saitama has a rather unique hobby: being a hero. In order to pursue his childhood dream, he trained relentlessly for three yearsโand lost all of his hair in the process. Now, Saitama is incredibly powerful, so much so that no enemy is able to defeat him in battle. In fact, all it takes to defeat evildoers with just one punch has led to an unexpected problemโhe is no longer able to enjoy the thrill of battling and has become quite bored.
This all changes with the arrival of Genos, a 19-year-old cyborg, who wishes to be Saitama’s disciple after seeing what he is capable of. Genos proposes that the two join the Hero Association in order to become certified heroes that will be recognized for their positive contributions to society, and Saitama, shocked that no one knows who he is, quickly agrees. And thus begins the story of One Punch Man, an action-comedy that follows an eccentric individual who longs to fight strong enemies that can hopefully give him the excitement he once felt and just maybe, he’ll become popular in the process โMAL
One Punch Man is quite different from other action anime, as rather than watch our protagonist struggle to become stronger, our hero has already reached his goals.
The series takes this plot and shows us the emptiness that follows achieving a lifelong goal. Showing us the journey to one’s goal is more fulfilling than actually reaching our goal.
22. Terra Fromer (Terraformars)

Terra Formars is a show that is short, violent, and action anime that is simple to understand.
During the 21st century, humanity attempted to colonize Mars by sending two species which could endure the harsh environment of the planet to terraform itโalgae and cockroaches. However, they did not anticipate the species’ remarkable ability to adapt. Now in the 26th century, a lethal disease known as the Alien Engine Virus has arrived on Earth, and the cure is suspected to be found only on Mars. The problem is, Mars in the present is overrun by creatures known as “Terraformars,” incredibly powerful and intelligent humanoid cockroaches that mutated from those originally sent to the planet.
The Annex I team, consisting of a hundred men and women genetically enhanced with characteristics of powerful organisms from earth, has been sent to Mars on a mission to find the cause of the Alien Engine Virus and to help cure humanityโsignalling the start of the crew’s fight for survival โMAL
Terra Formars is an action sci-fi horror anime that deals with humanity fighting insects much like the films and series “Starship Troopers”. Plot-wise it’s not the best cause they try to add so much into it, but for action, it is pretty good.
21. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (Reborn!)

Katekyo Hitman Reborn is a well-made anime for its comedy and action.
There is no putting it lightlyโTsunayoshi Sawada is just no good. He is clumsy, talentless, and desperately in love with the school idol Kyouko Sasagawa, a girl so completely out of his league. Dubbed “Loser Tsuna” by his classmates, he seems to be the very personification of failure in the guise of a middle-schooler.
Tsuna’s boring life takes an extraordinary twist when he encounters the mysterious Reborn, who happens to be a hitman… and shockingly, a baby! If you like shows about people with supernatural powers and action, I think you should watch this series. It’s a show that doesn’t give too much away in the beginning but as the story progresses you can piece the whole plot together. The characters are also brilliantly done especially the contractors that are supposed to be void of human emotions.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure follows the stories of a different generation of the JoJo family, whose members have unique powers that they use to fight supernatural enemies.
Kujo Jotaro is a normal, popular Japanese high-schooler, until he thinks that he is possessed by a spirit, and locks himself in prison. After seeing his grandfather, Joseph Joestar, and fighting Joseph’s friend Muhammad Abdul, Jotaro learns that the “Spirit” is actually Star Platinum, his Stand, or fighting energy given a semi-solid form. Later, his mother gains a Stand, and becomes sick. Jotaro learns that it is because the vampire Dio Brando has been revived 100 years after his defeat to Jonathan Joestar, Jotaro’s great-great-grandfather. Jotaro decides to join Joseph and Abdul in a trip to Egypt to defeat Dio once and for all โMAL
I like the way the story follows a different member of the Joestar family? It’s an anime that lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Though it’s an anime that requires a bit of getting used to, it sometimes doesn’t take itself seriously but when it does, it keeps you at the edge of your seat.
18. Naruto/Naruto: Shippuden

Naruto/Naruto: Shippuden is one of the longest-running and most famous international shounen. That has a special place in most anime enthusiasts.
Moments prior to Naruto Uzumaki’s birth, a huge demon known as the Kyuubi, the Nine-Tailed Fox, attacked Konohagakure, the Hidden Leaf Village, and wreaked havoc. In order to put an end to the Kyuubi’s rampage, the leader of the village, the Fourth Hokage, sacrificed his life and sealed the monstrous beast inside the newborn Naruto.
Now, Naruto is a hyperactive and knuckle-headed ninja still living in Konohagakure. Shunned because of the Kyuubi inside him, Naruto struggles to find his place in the village, while his burning desire to become the Hokage of Konohagakure leads him not only to some great new friends, but also some deadly foes โMAL
Naruto/Naruto: Shippuden is an anime with a lot of characters, and there is one you will feel you can relate to and you will cheer on for as the story progresses. And this feels like where the anime shines the most the ability to make us feel for certain characters. And all the while it takes us on an adrenaline-filled journey.

If you are a Rocky and Ashita no Joe fan, you will love Megalo Box a sports action anime that’s violent and entertaining with a futuristic setting.

Despite the young man’s brimming potential as a boxer, the illegal nature of his participation forces him to make a living off of throwing matches as dictated by his boss Gansaku Nanbu. However, this all changes when the Megalo Box champion Yuuri enters his shabby ring under the guise of just another challenger. Taken out in a single round, Junk Dog is left with a challenge: “If you’re serious about fighting me again, then fight your way up to me and my ring.”
Filled with overwhelming excitement and backed by the criminal syndicate responsible for his thrown matches, Junk Dog enters Megalonia: a world-spanning tournament that will decide the strongest Megalo Boxer of them all. Having no name of his own, he takes on the moniker of “Joe” as he begins his climb from the very bottom of the ranked list of fighters. Megalo Box is a great anime that asks a big question of how much pain, time, and energy one is willing to give and endure while chasing their dreams. And that resonates with me a lot.

Deadman Wonderland was one of those shows that had everyone who saw it wanting more.
It looked like it would be a normal day for Ganta Igarashi and his classmatesโthey were preparing to go on a class field trip to a certain prison amusement park called Deadman Wonderland, where the convicts perform dangerous acts for the onlookers’ amusement. However, Ganta’s life is quickly turned upside down when his whole class gets massacred by a mysterious man in red. Framed for the incident and sentenced to death, Ganta is sent to the very jail he was supposed to visit.
But Ganta’s nightmare is only just beginning.
The young protagonist is thrown into a world of sadistic inmates and enigmatic powers, to live in constant fear of the lethal collar placed around his neck that is slowed only by winning in the prison’s deathly games. Ganta must bet his life to survive in a ruthless place where it isn’t always easy to tell friend from foe, all while trying to find the mysterious “Red Man” and clear his name, in Deadman Wonderland โMAL
Deadman Wonderland is a well-written engaging anime with plenty of horrifying scenes, deaths, and amazing visuals.
It’s one of those animes that made me take an interest in the manga, wanting to find out the secrets that lie beneath Deadman Wonderland when I finished watching the anime.
15.Psycho-Pass

Psycho-pass takes place in a futuristic setting, with interesting characters and weapons, where you are constantly being monitored.
Justice, and the enforcement of it, has changed. Inspectors uphold the law by subjugating, often with lethal force, anyone harbouring the slightest ill-will; alongside them are Enforcers, jaded Inspectors that have become latent criminals, granted relative freedom in exchange for carrying out the Inspectors’ dirty work.
Into this world steps Akane Tsunemori, a young woman with an honest desire to uphold justice. However, as she works alongside veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami, she soon learns that the Sibyl System’s judgments are not as perfect as her fellow Inspectors assume. With everything she has known turned on its head, Akane wrestles with the question of what justice truly is, and whether it can be upheld through the use of a system that may already be corrupt โMAL
Psycho-Pass is an amazing action anime that shouldn’t be missed. It’s thought-provoking showing how sanity does not always equal morality.

Black Lagoon is an action anime with a lot of mayhem featuring modern-day pirates, outrageously amazing action scenes, and interesting characters.
Within Thailand is Roanapur, a depraved, crime-ridden city where not even the authorities or churches are untouched by the claws of corruption. A haven for convicts and degenerates alike, the city is notorious for being the centre of illegal activities and operations, often fueled by local crime syndicates.
Enter Rokurou Okajima, an average Japanese businessman who has been living a dull and monotonous life, when he finally gets his chance for a change of pace with a delivery trip to Southeast Asia. His business trip swiftly goes downhill as Rokurou is captured by a mercenary group operating in Roanapur, called Black Lagoon. It’s a story with a lot of ups and downs that tries to tackle themes like existentialism -what are we here for? what’s our purpose? and morality – what is wrong or right?
Plus it has gun-wielding nuns, sociopath maids, and the awesome Revy.
13. Vinland Saga

If you ever wondered what watching an angry Sasuke after he left the hidden Leaf village would be like, I give you Vinland Saga.
Young Thorfinn grew up listening to the stories of old sailors that had travelled the ocean and reached the place of legend, Vinland. It’s said to be warm and fertile, a place where there would be no need for fightingโnot at all like the frozen village in Iceland where he was born, and certainly not like his current life as a mercenary. War is his home now. Though his father once told him, “You have no enemies, nobody does. There is nobody who it’s okay to hurt,” as he grew, Thorfinn knew that nothing was further from the truth.
The war between England and the Danes grows worse with each passing year. Death has become commonplace, and the Viking mercenaries are loving every moment of it. Allying with either side will cause a massive swing in the balance of power, and the Vikings are happy to make names for themselves and take any spoils they earn along the way. Among the chaos, Thorfinn must take his revenge and kill the man who murdered his father, Askeladd. The only paradise for the Vikings, it seems, is the era of war and death that rages on โMAL
Vinland Saga is the Berserk Adaptation we deserved. With stunning artwork, consistent and solid animation, and characters you will connect with. It’s one of the best anime of 2019.
12. Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo is one of the most unconventional, thrilling action anime about samurai.
Fuu Kasumi is a young and clumsy waitress who spends her days peacefully working in a small teahouse. That is, until she accidentally spills a drink all over one of her customers! With a group of samurai now incessantly harassing her, Fuu desperately calls upon another samurai in the shop, Mugen, who quickly defeats them with his wild fighting technique, utilizing movements reminiscent to that of breakdancing. Unfortunately, Mugen decides to pick a fight with the unwilling ronin Jin, who wields a more precise and traditional style of sword fighting, and the latter proves to be a formidable opponent. The only problem is, they end up destroying the entire shop as well as accidentally killing the local magistrate’s son.
For their crime, the two samurai are captured and set to be executed. However, they are rescued by Fuu, who hires the duo as her bodyguards. Though she no longer has a place to return to, the former waitress wishes to find a certain samurai who smells of sunflowers and enlists the help of the now exonerated pair to do so. Despite initially disapproving of this idea, the two eventually agree to assist the girl in her quest; thus, the trio embarks upon an adventure to find this mysterious warriorโthat is, if Fuu can keep Mugen and Jin from killing each other.
Set in an alternate Edo Period of Japan, Samurai Champloo follows the journey of these three eccentric individuals in an epic quest full of action, comedy, and dynamic sword fighting, all set to the beat of a unique hip-hop infused soundtrack โMAL
It’s a series that takes the usual “power of love and friendship” plot most animes takes and throws it out the window.
Throwing a trio of mismatched characters together and forming an unlikely team, we will all be sad to see part ways at the end of their journey together. I’m still hoping for a second season.
11. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul is an anime I looked forward to watching after reading the plot, I immediately started reading the manga.
Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless cityโa place where vicious creatures called โghoulsโ exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society.
Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls’ inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies โMAL
Tokyo Ghoul was quite enjoyable even though I felt there was room for more improvement. It’s an anime that’s not for everyone either being a swing or a miss.

One day while excavating the earth, Simon stumbles upon a mysterious object that turns out to be the ignition key to an ancient artefact of war, which the duo dubs Lagann. Using their new weapon, Simon and Kamina fend off a surprise attack from the surface with the help of Yoko Littner, a hot-blooded redhead wielding a massive gun who wanders the world above.
In the aftermath of the battle, the sky is now in plain view, prompting Simon and Kamina to set off on a journey alongside Yoko to explore the wastelands of the surface. Soon, they join the fight against the “Beastmen,” humanoid creatures that terrorize the remnants of humanity in powerful robots called “Gunmen.” Although they face some challenges and setbacks, the trio bravely fights these new enemies alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, while slowly unravelling a galaxy-sized mystery โMAL
Gurren Lagann is a classic, vibrant, heroic, and outspoken anime. That’s an absolutely must-watch.

It is a true gem, that proves the saying “never judge a book by its cover” or in this case art style. A definite must-watch for an action lover’s time.

Afro Samurai is an anime about revenge and katanas, filled with a lot of action right off from the beginning of the story.
When he was a young boy, Afro witnessed his father be cut down in a duel at the hands of a man known only as Justice. After taking the life of Afro’s father, Justice cast aside his Number Two headband and took the Number One to claim its godly powers as his own.
Years later, having obtained the Number Two headband which grants him the right to challenge the Number One, Afro moves forward in his hunt for revenge on the man who murdered his father. There is just one thing that stands in his wayโeveryone else in the world! Though the Number One can only be challenged by the Number Two, the Number Two can be challenged by anyone. As his enemies gather to try and take the title of Number Two, Afro must fight through a myriad of foes and obstacles if he hopes to reach the Number One and claim vengeance once and for all โMAL

It’s an anime that ticks a lot of people’s boxes on what they want in an action anime.
6. Stranger: Mukou Hadan (Sword of the Stranger)

Sword of the Stranger is a great movie with a lot of amazing action scenes.
In the Sengoku period of Japan, a young orphan named Kotarou and his dog Tobimaru steals from unsuspecting villagers in order to make ends meet. However, Kotarou is forced to remain on the run when he finds himself being hunted down by assassins sent by China’s Ming Dynasty for mysterious reasons not involving his petty crimes.
Fortunately, the duo runs into Nanashi, a ronin who has taken refuge in a small temple, when Kotarou is attacked and Tobimaru poisoned. Although the samurai saves the helpless pair from their pursuers, he feels that there is no need to help them further; but when offered a gem in exchange for his services as a bodyguard, he reluctantly accepts Kotarou’s offer of employmentโjust until Tobimaru is healed and the two reach their destination. As the three set out on a perilous journey, it soon becomes evident that their path is riddled with danger, as the Ming Dynasty has now sent a terrifying swordsman after them to capture Kotarou and fulfil a certain prophecy โMAL
If you love historical settings that’s another reason to give Sword of the Stranger a chance.
It won’t disappoint with its relatable characters, amazing action sequences, beautiful art style, and just the brotherly love that is shown between the two main characters as the story progresses.

Dragon Ball Z is like a fine wine that only seems to get better with the years.

4. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an anime with an amazing plot, engaging action, lovable characters, comedy, drama, and beautiful music.

Alchemy is bound by this Law of Equivalent Exchangeโsomething the young brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric only realize after attempting human transmutation: the one forbidden act of alchemy. So 6 anime that are similar to Dororo?, hello everyone. So you want to watch another anime with a moody dark tone about love, greed, revenge and betrayal.
Dororo was produced by Tezuka Productions and MAPPA, and is the brainchild of Osamu Tezuka- who is considered “the father of manga”. For creation of classics like Astro Boy.
And for those not familiar with Dororo yet;
Dororo is an anime that follows the story of Hyakkimaru, whose greedy and selfish father Kagemitsu Daigo, sacrifices his body to demons to gain power (yes he won’t be winning any father of the year awards). Moribito is an anime series that like Dororo follows two strangers who meet by chance, Prince Chagum– the emperor’s son and whose also thought to be the reincarnation of a water demon that is causing drought to their empire, so therefore most be sacrificed. And Balsa– the kick butt heroine who saves the prince’s life during an assassination attempt and later begged by his mother to keep him safe.
The same themes are present as in Dororo from the emphasis on the beauty of life, nature, family and the bonds that can be fromed by two strangers who embark on this journey together.
Katanagatari

Katanagatari is set in the edo period Japan, where the Shogunate and samurai are still very active and ruling. And there are many different sword-fighting techniques.
We follow Shichika Yasuri–a wielder of a sword technique that uses his own body as a blade. He is also the seventh head of the Kyotouryuu school, living quietly with his sister Nanami.
Until he meets ths strategist Togame, who he falls for. She has been sent by the Shogunate to retrieve 12 unique swords called “Deviant Blades”, he accept to help her on her mission because he likes her. So their dangerous adventure beings.
Katanagatari similarities to Dororo is in it historic setting and our two characters, Shichika and Togame whose continued association on their journey to retrieve the 12 swords, causes major developmental growth in both characters. Making them both better and more relatable.
Afro Samurai

Afro after witnessing the death of his father in a dual with a man named Justice for the Number One headband. Afro vows revenge against Justice who killed his father for the Number One headband.
But there is a catchy on his path to vengeance he has to possess the Number Two headband, if he wishes to fight the new Number One. And even after possessing the Number Two headband, he will have to fight pretty much everyone in the world people to get to the Number One. Because unlike the Number One, the Number Two can be challenged by anyone.
Afro Samurai to me is similar to Dororo in it’s setting of samurai and the moral lessons, it constantly resounds in us that “how far is too far?” on our path to revenge. Is revenge really done for what is lost to us? or really more for us to find a way to cope with our loss. Are we really hurting anyone but ourselves has we chase revenge? and What remains after, of us when we have carried out our revenge?
Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo follows three unlikely pair Fuu, Jin and Mugen. Brought together by chance but stuck together by choice or blackmail?, out of a debt to pay to Fuu after saving them from being executed.
They follow her on a wild adventure to different places in their search for the samurai that smells of sunflowers.
Samurai Champloo and Dororo are similar in the delight you will get in watching them on their journey, it really makes you feel like you are setting out on an adventure. Characters having both minor and major goals they wish to accomplish, which make them more relatable. Both animes have an historical setting and many interesting characters they meet along the way, also with their minor or major goals that make them very human like instead of just 2 dimensional characters.
Stranger: Mukou Hadan (Sword of the Stranger)

We follow the story of an orphan boy named Kotarou, his dog Tobimaru and Nanashi a ronin. Having a random encounter in a small temple, where they are attacked by assassins sent by the China’s Ming Dynasty to kill Kotarou but the two are saved by Nanashi.
After Kotarou offers Nanashi a gem in exchange for his continued protection and escort to their destination, he agrees and dangerous journey with many twists and turns begins.
Sword of the Stranger shares similarities to Dororo with it’s historical setting, main characters being similar in both series are young, orphaned and streetwise youth, with a strong and older brotherly figure. Growth for both character, happen also from having the other at their side. The duo feed of each others being, making them become more relatable characters.

Berserk is an amazing story that is hard to know where to begin from explaining it, like Dororo it’s a story filled with love, loss, greed, betrayal, revenge and so much more, just with the story more gritty, darker and mature.
We meet Guts a mercenary with an horrible childhood, who finds some one he respects and trusts, only to be betrayed and have everything taken from him right in front of his eyes by the person he thought was a friend, in the most gruesome way possible.
