There’s been a growing trend of some of the most popular anime from the ’90s getting sequels. InuYasha, an anime that aired nearly 200 episodes, is the latest series to get such a treatment. Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of the series has just announced, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, a sequel series that will center around the children of the characters from the original InuYasha. As a HUGE Inuyasha fan, of course, I’m excited about this.
Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon is set decades after the conclusion of the original series. IT follows the daughters of Inuyasha and his half-brother, Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru now has two half-demon twins, Towa and Setsuna, who get separated from each other at a young age. When the two are reunited, a lot has changed and Setsuna has lost all memories of her sister, Towa. The two team up with Mohora, the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome, and these three half-demon female warriors travel between worlds to learn more about who they are and where they come from.
Setsuna concept art.
It looks like she has Sesshomaru’s fluffy tail. Or Mokomoko, if you choose to believe the fanon that it’s a parasite-creature that attaches directly to Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru seems to have the ability to control the creature, but it’s definitely not just “fluff”.
Mohora’s concept art is really cute. She looks like a mix of Kagome and Inuyasha in human form. While I kinda always imagined them having a white-haired child, I can settle for canon as well.
It sounds like the structure of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon will be similar to Boruto: Next Generations. Likely, the characters from InuYasha will still appear, but more like side characters as the torch gets passed on.
You won’t have to wait long in order to get these new adventures in the InuYasha universe. Viz has revealed that the anime is set to premiere in the fall in Japan. They will also be handling the digital streaming and home video rights in North America. In the meantime, I’ll be rewatching my Inuyasha DVD sets and rereading all the fanfiction.
But of course, there’s still controversy for this Inuyasha Sequel…
So, the fanbase spent about five seconds laughing at Sesshomaru for having half-demon daughters. After all, he spent hundreds of episodes going on about how being a half-demon was the worst thing ever… Then it hit. Sesshomaru hated every human but Rin, so who did he have children wi–
CUE ENTIRE Inuyasha FANBASE GOING CRAZY
The mother couldn’t be Rin… could it? There’s really no other candidate unless it’s a character we’ve never met before. I know I always shipped him with Kaguya but she died and I don’t see them bringing her back without a careful explanation.
You see, Sesshomaru is about five hundred years old. Wouldn’t any relationship he had with a human being of a deviant nature? Does that make Kagome and InuYasha, who is about two hundred years old, also the same? That aside, is it grooming? Did he raise her, or simply protect her for a few months? How gross would it actually be if they got together?? Wait, did they even get together????
It turns out that people did indeed ship Rin and Sesshomaru. So along with the general freak out, there’s also celebration from supporters of the ship, who are especially gleeful because the majority of the fandom dislikes their ship.
Now people are looking for official evidence that supports if Rin is the mother or not for the Inuyasha sequel.
Basically, it’s a mess, and we probably won’t get any more info confirming or denying if Rin is the mother until the Inuyasha sequel comes out this fall, so the fandom might be in a state of emergency until then.
There are worse things in life than a fictional thousand-year-old demon dude making an impact on a girl’s life for a year, disappearing for a decade or longer, returning when she’s an adult and fully realized person, and potentially, falling in love then.
Also, I don’t think the few months they spent together counts as grooming if Seshomaru never intended to get together with her. Kinda like the big war going on with Angels of death and the ship war due to Rachel being 13 and Zack being 20.
IT’S NOT A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP AND IT IS AND WAS NOT GROOMING.
Pretty much the problem is that we never had a chance to see how their relationship developed over the years, yeah it is creepy if he got her pregnant and then dropped her in the village when she was still 11, but that’s obviously not what happened. In my opinion, Rin taught Sesshomaru how to not hate humans and they had a type of master/padawan relationship
I’m torn on the ick factor of this, but I don’t think it’s setting a dangerous message or tone in general. Rumiko Takashi didn’t even write Kagome and Inuyasha together until she was at least 18, so I don’t think there’s an underlying theme to it. In fact, I’m mostly excited about seeing a cherished childhood favorite come back.
