The Owl House: A Breath of Fresh Air for TV

The Owl House is amazing and I think everyone should watch it. I was told to watch this and I’m glad I did! It’s a breath of fresh air for viewers. It has a character that is OPENLY bi and showing a female crushing on another female. As well as using a metaphor for depression or perhaps another mental illness in it. I know I basically spoiled what this article is about but I thought that would be easy and we’ll be delving into it in more depth and talking about WHY it’s so awesome these are included.

Basic Plot for The Owl House

Luz Noceda is a teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to another world. When on the Boiling Isles, she befriends the rebellious witch Eda and her adorable demon roommate named King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch. She becomes Eda’s apprentice at the Owl House. She ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting.

Okay, so first, the openly bisexual-ness and gayness that is in the show.

Luz has shown she’s attracted to male characters in the show. In the two most recent episodes, “Enchanting Grom Fright” and “Wing It Like Witches,” a relationship between Luz and the recurring female character Amity is explored. It is revealed that Amity had intentions to ask Luz to Grom, and the two share a dance together.

Amity was first shown to be an antagonist but her redemption arc has been improving. The two have a sorta friendship with Amity majorly crushing on Luz and Luz being oblivious.

Series creator Dana Terrace substantiated viewers’ theories on Twitter that this was indeed a portrayal of an LGBTQ relationship. Also, something that some Disney leaders weren’t always keen on having in the show.

“In [development] I was very open about my intention to put queer kids in the main cast. I’m a horrible liar so sneaking it in would’ve been hard,” Terrace wrote. “When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could not represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the channel.” And then it went ahead with approval!

Good thing it did. The fandom has exploded and MORE fans have come aboard the shipping of Luz/Amity. The show really wouldn’t be the same without it. I can’t wait to see their relationship explored and good on them for showing it’s okay to like/love/crush on more than one gender! As a grey asexual, I love seeing more than the typical hetero relationships shown. I love to love and want it for everyone!

Eda’s Curse Is Totally a Metaphor For Depression or a type of Mental Illness

While watching episode 4, the first thing that came to my head when Eda was explaining her curse was mental health. Is it supposed to be a metaphor for that or just chronic illness in general? She needs to take medicine daily or she loses control of herself. I’ve met so many people that have to take pills or medicines to be stable and not become a “monster”. Things like depression, bipolar, BPD and more. Our brains don’t make the chemicals needed so we have to buy store-bought.

Eda is known as “The Owl Lady” due to having been cursed by her sister, Lilith, to become a giant feral owl-like creature known as the Owl Beast. Eda managed to counter this with an elixir that prevents her from transforming, but as the show goes on, it works less and less. She kept her curse a secret from her roommate, King until she got loose in the house when she was cursed.

Personally, I love that they’ve included this. It could mean something totally different but I wasn’t the only person who thought it was a metaphor so that makes me think it’s possible.

It’s not without it’s controversy though…

One Million Moms, which regularly launches campaigns against questionable media content, started a petition, calling on Disney Channel to cancel the show, which premiered on January 10th.

Since launching the campaign, more than 16,000 people have signed in support of cancelling the show produced by Dana Terrace, who has also worked on the shows, “Gravity Falls” and “Duck Tales.”

Though I don’t agree with the website and think the show is beautiful and amazing, I thought it was interesting to include and see what others opinions were.

Voltron Season 8: Everything Right and Mostly Wrong
Caution – this article discusses Voltron season 8, and includes major spoilers.

Were any of you fans of How I Met Your Mother? A pretty amazing show which capped off an epic final season with quite possibly the worst finale of all time? Voltron season 8 is my HIMYM season 9. I loved almost all of Voltron. I mean Season 3 started getting a little weird and out of place but then they got back on track. Kinda. But then they had to end it…well like they did.

Some were happy that Shiro, a character faced with constant adversity in his story, might get a happy ending, but the show’s large queer audience tossed around words like “betrayal” and “dread.” And that’s all because there was a LOT wrong with Voltron Season 8.

So the agenda for this week for Voltron Season 8

Monday: cry because Voltron is over.

Tuesday: cry because they killed Allura.

Wednesday: cry because I miss Adam.

Thursday: cry because I miss Voltron.

Friday: cry because there won’t be new episodes.

Saturday: cry because Lance deserves better.

Sunday: cry because of Matt’s new haircut.

The real star of this season though was Allura. Her romance with Lance was pretty expected and while I wish they had done more to build it up (much like the Haggar backstory) it still works. They’re cute together! They got to cuddle and support one another. That’s the kind of healthy relationship I like to see on kids’ TV.

In “Launch Date”, the relationship between Lance and Allura finally came to a head.

I was iffy on Lance as a character for the first couple of seasons, but he really grew on me as he grew up. I’m usually not a fan of the kind of relationships Lance/Allura represented at the beginning – and obviously, uninterested woman being relentlessly pursued by a man who won’t take no for an answer.

But Lance/Allura was extremely well-written and developed naturally throughout seven seasons. They became close and came to appreciate each others’ positive qualities and eventually developed real romantic feelings. This was one of the more well-done heterosexual relationships I’ve seen in a while because the build-up was believable. Their little moments through the season (hand-holding, hugging, just being together) was great, but sadly Lance’s entire purpose became “being worried about Allura”. He had some of the best character development on the show, so it was disappointing that he became such a flat character in Voltron season 8.

I can admit that even while being a part time Klance Shipper. I LOVE Lance and Keith together and while I think it was wrong for Allura to die, now Lance and Keith can be together.

Voltron season 8 was a fabulous season for Allura. Not only did we get to see her explore her Altean magic (since when can she camouflage herself? and she, like, healed an entire park!), but we also got to see her go a little dark side, which was pretty great. She realized that she had found a new family – such as when the other girls took her shopping for her and Lance’s date, or when she ate dinner with Lance’s family – and she was willing to put herself in harm’s way to save existence.

So, naturally, they killed her. And I suppose since Alfor sacrificed himself, they wanted to bring the story full circle. But I want to know who thought it was a good idea to take a beloved, heroic, WOC lead and kill her off in the final ten minutes of the final season. Why must Allura sacrifice everything she gained, finally find a family and a place where she belonged and was needed? Why was she the only Paladin that needed to die? I mean, why even bother getting her together with Lance if they were just going to kill her off? Why were we – and the Paladins – not given the chance to properly mourn her?

These are questions that I need answers to, but honestly, no answer is going to satisfy me. Yes, this was an active decision Allura made to fix what Honerva had done, but having her be the only loss suffered just seems wrong. No one even tried to think of another solution (they could have sacrificed the lions). She didn’t even get to say goodbye to Coran.

And Shiro’s ending for Voltron Season 8?

For Voltron season 8 to end with Shiro marrying some side character who I don’t even think has a name, a character with whom he did not even converse, who was mostly in the background of bridge scenes, and who had maybe four lines total the entire season? For Shiro to have “found his happiness” and retired, when he was so, so happy to be a Paladin, to be the captain of the Atlas, to be out in space, exploring?

This is a man who had a (presumably) happy relationship and gave it up to follow his dream. You cannot seriously expect me to believe that he would just quit and get married. He is the only character whose epilogue had nothing to do with his character or his dream. Just married. Not to mention, nothing angers me more in storytelling than relationships without development, and the idea that he wasn’t happy until he got married is ridiculous.

And honestly – the fact that Keith and Shiro almost never share the screen after everything they’ve gone through?

Season 7 was bookended by Keith saving Shiro and they don’t even hang out together on their last night on Earth. I was honestly not expecting them to end up together. ~~I mean it’s not like there’s an entire episode comparing Keith and Shiro’s ex-boyfriend oh wait yes there is.~~ They lost all of their closeness basically once it was revealed that Shiro was gay, which is a travesty.

And then there was Lance

HOW do you become part Altean? I feel like that was something the writers just threw on at the end. One of the things that made Lance so special is that he didn’t have any magic powers or skills. He was a normal human being and ROCKED it. So why did they have to go and make him Altean?

I don’t want this review of Voltron Season 8 to be entirely negative, because as I said earlier, I did enjoy this season until the finale, so here is a little list of things I liked:
- Veronica and Acxa moment’s
- Pidge connecting to the forest
- Awkward dinner conversations with Acxa
- Keith and Hunk stuck on the alien version of “It’s a Small World” and Keith going predictably nuts from the song
- The Atlas crew gossiping about Shiro’s well-deserved arm wrestling win
- Baby Lotor
- Keith in a PONY-TAIL! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!
On the whole, though, this is a lackluster ending for what had up until now been a well-written show with strong, well-developed characters. Voltron season 8 felt very rushed and out of character, with a poorly thought out and clearly tacked-on ending. This show deserved better. The characters deserved better. Still, I think it’s going to become one of the classics that will go up there with Sailor Moon and Pokemon.

Anime Coloring Pages For Everyone

Anime Coloring Pages for everyone. Almost everyone loves to color. It’s relaxing and even as an adult, it can make your day a bit better. I always include it in my self-care routine. And even more people love anime. So when you put the two together, you just get a wonderful mix of happiness.

I’m a big fan of coloring. There are days when I’m just done with being an adult and having to pay bills so I like to find ways to relax. Sometimes I will watch anime, but as an anime blogger, that can feel like work instead of relaxation. So, I’ll turn to coloring. It’ll bring me back to the days of childhood where my biggest worry was if I could sleep-over at a friends house and when the next Harry Potter movie would come out.

And I absolutely LOVE these Jade Summer anime coloring pages. But you don’t have to take it from me. Here’s a review directly from a buyer…

As you can see, people LOVE them. Jade Summer does several of these from chibi’s to Light Fantasy. And I love that it’s perfect for kids and adults. And as the reviewer pointed out, you can use MARKERS and not have it bleed behind on the back page.

Coloring definitely has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring about more mindfulness. There are claims by many that coloring is a form of meditation. When you meditate, your brain enters a relaxed state by focusing on the present and blocking out the nonstop thinking we all experience. As a result, you reach a state of calm that relieves your brain from the daily stresses of life.

Not that you don’t have to meditate, but coloring can definitely improve upon this and make it even more helpful.

What makes it even cooler to hear about, is that coloring can be extremely helpful to seniors as well. And I think it would be awesome to see my Grandmother coloring in these anime coloring pages. Anytime I look at these images, it makes me itch to get out my markers and color pencils.

When is the Reveal? Miraculous Ladybug

When is the reveal? With the first episode of Season 3 arriving way earlier than expected, AND spoilers leaking out, fans are more confused than ever when the reveal will happen in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir.

Warning: Has spoilers from the end of season 3, including the Queen’s Battle and Chat Blanc.

But first, I had a few opinions/theories on when it might be. And the relationship between Marinette/Ladybug and Adrien/Chat Noir.

First of all, in Season 2, Frozer showed more of the Adrien and Marinette moments. But not in the way you might expect. It was more showing what Adrien actually thinks of Marinette…for now.

But before the reveal, I have to admit something…
I STILL CAN’T SEE THAT ADRIEN LIKES MARINETTE IN A ROMANTIC WAY.

I know, I know. It must be horrible because they’re OTP and the stars of the show. But I just can’t see it.

But not because I love Lukanette. And I LOVE Luka. He is one of my favorites. I don’t want him to get hurt. It breaks my heart just thinking of the pain he’s in knowing that Marinette is in love with Adrien. Such a precious, pure child.

I love and want Adrien and Marinette to be together at the end, believe me. And it triggers me how stupid they both are. I mean, how oblivious can you be?!?!

I rewatched every episode of the first and second season and yes, sure, there have been many cute moments between them (I loved the Adrienette ball scene and I squealed during the balcony scene because Marichat is my OTP) but no more.

All I can see is that Adrien likes Marinette JUST AS A FRIEND.
Adrien is comfortable with Marinette, and he likes being with her, but he doesn’t have romantic feelings for her.
HE WASN’T EVEN JEALOUS OF LUKA DURING THEIR DOUBLE DATE.

He was too focused on skating with Kagami.
Many of you would say “yeah but did you see that when Marinette crushed on the wall he left Kagami and tried to help her”. Well, I would have done that too with my friend. Adrien is just a gentleman.

THINK ABOUT THIS:
IF ADRIEN LIKED MARINETTE IN A ROMANTIC WAY, HE WOULD HAVE ASKED MARINETTE TO GO OUT, AND NOT KAGAMI WHO HE HAS RECENTLY MET, don’t you think?
HE DIDN’T THINK TWICE TO ASK HER FOR A DATE.

Now I’m thinking that Adrien is into girls with a very strong personality, girls that are sure, confident and that can speak their mind just like Ladybug and Kagami.

Of course, he cares A LOT about Marinette, but not in a romantic way. More like BFF or sister.

FOR NOW.

I mean, the first episode of Season 3 had Adrien looking at Marinette like THIS

And we saw Chat Blanc where Marinette and Adrien got to be a real couple for a while. Adrien will be head over heels for her in a second once they both reveal their identities and Hawkmoth is behind bars(or dead. I’m still hating him for what he did during Chat Blanc. He’s pure evil).

Okay. Now that I got that out of the way, let’s talk about when the reveal is for Miraculous Ladybug.

When is the reveal for Miraculous Ladybug?

There has been tons of speculation and theories. Here’s what we know for FACT.

They have up to 5 seasons written out. The last time they had a reveal promised, the kwami’s themselves found out, not the owner. It was also confirmed that Adrien and Marinette will be canon but not yet. Hence why they’re bringing in other love interests. The characters still need time to grow and develop.

That’s the part that breaks my heart. I love my precious cinnamon roll, Adrien but I hate knowing that Luka will get hurt. I hope he gets his happy ending too. I’ve seen posts claiming that he’ll end up with Chloe but not what season. The end of Season 3 had her saying he was cute but that was the only interaction we’ve seen between the two. Not to mention, she’ll need a serious redemption arc before she can be with anyone.

Astruc mentioned that some people don’t get redemption, which might have meant her, but I’m not sure. We saw in the Felix episode that Chloe does have a soft side. Sure, she’s an entitled brat, but she does have some good qualities buried underneath that awful yellow.

What’s the Difference Between Cartoon and Anime?

Japanese animation, or anime, was first introduced in 1960. However, there is debate as to whether or not Anime should be considered a cartoon. Most westerners consider Anime to be another form of cartoon.

Nevertheless, Japan does not want anime to be considered as a form of cartoon. Japan is covered with Anime images, and they use Anime in everyday life. It is part of their culture. Anime is used in Japanese education, marketing strategies, magazines, movies, and books.

So, what’s the difference between cartoon and anime?

Anime (Japanese: アニメ?, [a.ni.me] are Japanese animated productions and come in all formats, such as television series (such as Dragon Ball and Inuyasha, animated short films, and full-length feature films.)

A cartoon is a form of two-dimensional illustrated visual art. While the specific definition has changed over time, modern usage refers to a typically non-realistic or semi-realistic drawing or painting intended for satire, caricature, or humor.

No matter how you look at it, an anime is a cartoon. The main difference is that anime is considered a Japanese style of cartoons in the West.

Many English-language dictionaries define anime as “a Japanese style of motion-picture animation” or as “a style of animation developed in Japan.”

However, in Japan, the term “anime” does not specify an animation’s nation of origin or style. Instead, it serves as a blanket term to refer to all forms of animation from around the world (both foreign and domestic).

The word “anime” is a loan word referring to “animation” or “cartoons,” adapted from the English word “animation.” So, Pokemon is both, no matter if it is designed for kids or what.

Or, the TL, DR (the too long, didn’t read version) the difference is mostly a matter of opinion and location. Most of us will agree that Pokemon and Sailor Moon cover both but other shows will fall under just one category.
