Hello everyone, so today I want to talk about fantasy anime shows that made me wish I was living in an otherworldly, supernatural, and magic-filled world, with vast locations and periods.

I have a few because I have always ended up falling in love with all the anime characters of the fantasy anime I like, wishing I were with them, adventuring, laughing, crying, passing milestones that would level us up, and the dinners together at the tavern after missions.

The unique randomness, dynamic characters, romance, jokes, and plots borrowed from Japanese history and Western culture for across-the-board enjoyment are some of the things I love about them. So I’ve compiled the top 20 fantasy anime list that made us at MyAnimeGo feel this way.

He tries to find out the truth on why they can’t leave the game with other players or fighting other players along the way who have different motives.

Comments

The story moved at a slow pace and had so many plots and side plots, you would think it was this, then get the rug pulled from under you and it would turn out to be this, which made you develop so many theories, but towards the end so many things where explained.

19. Ascendance of a Bookworm

I can’t help but connect with Myne’s unbridled passion for books and her resolute commitment to bringing them back to life in a world where they are nearly extinct. Her struggles and triumphs feel so relatable, and her journey is one of both personal growth and literary revival. To top it off, this fantasy anime has no annoying fan service.

Ascendance of a Bookworm is a beautifully crafted narrative that resonates with anyone who’s ever cherished the written word. It’s a show that will leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling, and maybe even inspire you to pick up a book or two!

18. Overlord

Synopsis

It’s 2126, a Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game called Yggdrasil was released and it’s very popular for being able to allow players to interact with the game, after 12 years it’s finally shutting down.  

In the game a guild known as Ainz Ooal Gown once made up of 41 members and know as one of the strongest guilds in the game, now only for 4 members remain and out of the 4 only one, an elder lich character named Momonga, continues to play as the guild leader, maintaining their headquarters- The Great Tomb of Nazarick.

Momonga spends his last few moments in the game as the server begins to shut down to his surprise despite the clock having struck midnight, he is still in the game and the NPC have also developed personalities. So now he commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and take over the new world he is in and maybe finding other players stuck in the game like him. 

Comments

I had my reservations about it coming in, thinking it would be generic and the same old same old, but it differs in the sense that the protagonist is the antagonist and I felt this was new and creative.

The art and music were a good combination, matching themselves brilliantly and the characters were great and a good combination, complementing each other.

17. Log Horizon

• Genres: Action, Adventure, Magic, Game, Fantasy

Synopsis

After a game update of a popular MMORPG, Elder Tales thirty thousand Japanese gamers are taken away from their everyday lives into the game world are unable to log out. The series follows the socially awkward strategist and veteran of the game, Shiroe and other players.

Shiroe explores the limits of his new reality, learning to live in this new world, leading and working with other players and NPC in other to bring stability back to the virtual city of Akihabara. Trying to make the best of their new world.

It’s slow-paced at the beginning but picks up as the show goes on, and unlike other shounen anime where the main character powers up and defeats his enemy, Shiroe is not like that, instead of With his strategic approach to battle, he’s usually in the background controlling the flow of battle, getting him the nickname “villain in glasses”.

It’s not your typical show, I especially liked how realism in the world of fantasy was added into Log Horizon, it’s not a perfect show but it was enjoyable to watch.

16. Sword Art Online

Synopsis

The series takes place in the near future and focuses on protagonist Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki that are trapped with ten-thousand others by the game’s creator, in a virtual reality MMORPG game, in the scenic and elaborate world of Aincrad.

In this near-future 2022, where virtual reality has developed greatly and with the aid of “NerveGear” technology, players control their avatars in the game using their thoughts.

Using fantastic weapons to fight gruesome monsters and other players, unable to log out the only way out of this virtual hell is to complete all one hundred levels of the game. If you die in the game, you die in real life.

There are some harsh reviews out there about this fantasy anime, and some point out some far-off points, but I believe that even if the plot and characters were not the best, the art and sound get high marks. But you have to admit it is enjoyable; the pacing was off, and the time skip didn’t help its cause.

With SAO, you will either love this fantasy anime or hate it.

15. Goblin Slayer

Synopsis

Fuelled by a deep-seated vendetta after a goblin raid destroyed his life, the Goblin Slayer’s existence is singularly dedicated to exterminating these vile creatures. Along the way, he’s joined by a motley crew of fellow adventurers, each carrying their own burdens and motivations.

This anime is a rollercoaster of intensity. It doesn’t pull any punches. It’s dark, it’s brutal, and it’s utterly gripping. I mean, the Goblin Slayer’s sheer determination to wipe out goblins, no matter the cost, is both haunting and strangely heroic.

You’ll find yourself on the edge of your seat as this group battles these seemingly insignificant foes with a ferocity that’s nothing short of awe-inspiring. But fair warning, it’s not for the faint of heart. If you’re into dark fantasy with a heavy dose of action, this one’s a must-watch.

14. Magical Circle

Mahoujin Guruguru (2017)

Mahoujin Guruguru is an anime that is funny throughout with RPG elements and references. It makes fun of itself and you strangely don’t get bored of it like you would with some animes of its type.

This anime brings back a lot of nostalgia, with its narrative, dialogue box, and sometimes 2D pixelated scenes. It’s an old classic that has been remade for the new generation, and it was executed brilliantly.

13. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

Synopsis

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic is a neat blend of adventure, magic, and friendship that had me hooked from the start. The world-building is rich and immersive, drawing you into a vibrant universe with its own rules and politics.

Aladdin, Alibaba, and Morgiana are a fantastic trio with distinct personalities and goals, making their adventures both exciting and heartwarming.

But what actually sets Magi apart is how it tackles complex themes like destiny, power, and morality. It’s not just about flashy magic battles; it delves deep into the human psyche.

Whether you’re in it for the epic adventures or the thought-provoking themes, Magi delivers on all fronts.

12. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid (Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon)

Comments

This anime is like a warm, fluffy blanket on a chilly day. The characters are an absolute riot, each one bursting with personality and quirks that’ll make you laugh and go “aww” in equal measure. Kobayashi’s down-to-earth nature and Tohru’s over-the-top dragon antics create a delightful contrast that’s both hilarious and heartwarming.

But what really gets me is the theme of unconventional families. The show beautifully explores the idea that family isn’t just about blood relations; it’s about the connections we make and the bonds we form. Moreover, who can resist the charming chaos that ensues when dragons try to fit into human society?

If you’re looking for a feel-good series with a side of supernatural flair and plenty of laughs, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is pure gold.

11. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a fantasy anime that I consider an absolute blast, and I’ll tell you why. First off, Rimuru is the most endearing slime you’ll ever meet. His upbeat and optimistic personality, combined with his ever-expanding repertoire of skills, makes for some entertaining and often hilarious situations.

But what really makes this show shine is its world-building and character development. You’ll find yourself immersed in a vast and intricate fantasy world filled with unique races and cultures. Rimuru’s ability to form friendships and alliances with a diverse cast of characters adds depth and charm to the story.

It’s a story of growth, both for Rimuru and the world he’s building. Seeking isekai that delivers humor, heart, and epic moments? Look no further, this one’s the champion.

10. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Mushoku Tensei is a true gem in the isekai genre. Rudeus is an incredibly relatable character, flawed yet determined to better himself in this new life. His journey of self-improvement and the development of his magical abilities is captivating, and you’ll find yourself cheering for his successes and empathizing with his struggles.

What makes this anime unique is its rich world-building and attention to detail. The fantasy world feels alive and vibrant, filled with various cultures and fantastical creatures. And the character interactions are simply delightful. It’s not just about epic battles (although there are some fantastic ones); it’s a story about personal growth, relationships, and the complexity of human (and non-human) emotions.

For those seeking an isekai that intertwines enchanting adventures with profound character growth, Mushoku Tensei deserves a top spot on your watchlist.

9. Berserk

8. Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen is like a shot of adrenaline straight to the heart. The animation quality is out of this world, making every fight scene an absolute visual spectacle.

But what truly hooked me is the characters – they’re not your typical one-dimensional heroes. Yuji, in particular, is a fantastic protagonist, combining humor, vulnerability, and sheer badassery in one package. And let’s not forget Gojo Satoru, who’s just a certified scene-stealer with his overpowered charisma.

If you’re a fan of intense battles, cool curses, and a dash of humor, Jujutsu Kaisen is the way to go.

7. Chainsaw Man

• Genres: Action, Horror, Supernatural, Dark Fantasy, Shounen

Synopsis

Chainsaw Man takes us on a wild and bloody ride in a world where devils lurk in the shadows, and devil hunters stand as humanity’s last line of defense.

I absolutely love how Chainsaw Man takes you on a wild, unapologetically dark, and oh-so-twisted journey into the realm of supernatural horror. I was all in on this anime from the get-go because of its constant action, surprise plot turns, and a protagonist like no other. Denji’s transformation into the Chainsaw Man is not just physical but also symbolic of his evolution as a character.

It’s gory, intense, and filled with moments that make you question the very nature of good and evil. This one’s a visceral rollercoaster that’s not afraid to push the boundaries of horror and fantasy. Fans who enjoy the darker side of anime and don’t mind a generous dose of blood and gore will love Chainsaw Man.

6. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Synopsis

From the breathtaking animation to the compelling characters, this anime is a masterpiece. Tanjiro’s unwavering love for his sister and his indomitable spirit are truly inspiring.

And let’s not forget about the stunning battles, especially those with the Hashira, the elite demon slayers. Each episode is a visual treat, and it’s packed with enough action and heart to leave you both breathless and teary-eyed. It’s no wonder it became a global phenomenon. If you haven’t watched it yet, trust me, it’s worth every moment.

5. Made in Abyss

Synopsis

The is about a young girl Riko, who finds and befriends a humanoid robot boy Reg, who has no recollection of the events before she finds him and she descends with him to find her mother Lyza the Annihilator, a White Whistle in the Abyss.

What is the Abyss?

It’s a gaping hole stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a long time ago. How did it come to be? what lies at the very bottom? People known as Divers have sought to solve these mysteries. The best and deepest Divers are known as White Whistles.

Riko who aspires to be a White Whistle like her mother, exploring the furthest reaches of the Abyss, she is completely fascinated with everything about the Abyss. However she’s just a Red Whistle– a novice, she’s only permitted to roam its most upper layer.

Descending the Abyss, they have no idea the harsh reality that awaits them.

Made in Abyss can be brutal, gut-wrenching, and emotionally taxing. Yet, it’s also profoundly beautiful, with stunning animation and an ethereal soundtrack that immerses you in its beautiful (yet twisted) world.

Honestly, this series is not your typical fantasy anime. It’s a heartfelt, touching journey that will tug at your heartstrings and haunt your dreams. But you won’t regret a single moment of it. It’s a masterpiece, plain and simple.

4. Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World-

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Synopsis

Subaru Natsuki is a hikikomori who does nothing but play games when leaving a convenience store at night, he suddenly finds himself in another world, taken from his everyday life and dropped into a fantasy world, with no sign of who or how he was summoned.

On arriving he is attacked by some thugs, armed with only a bag of groceries and a now useless cell phone, he is beaten to a pulp. Luckily for him, a silver-haired half-elf girl, Satella, whose name is later revealed to be Emilia is passing by with her companion Puck in pursuit of someone who stole her insignia and saves him. To repay the favour he offers to help her in her search, after finding it though they are both killed, Subaru awakens back to the time when he first gets to this new world. Discovering he as acquired an ability he calls “Return by Death”, which enables him to reverse time by dying.   

He will face many obstacles, challenges and sometimes even just having “Return by Death” will not be enough, has saved Emilia and everyone he cares about in this new world.

This is a fantasy anime show for people who are new and old to anime. It takes different aspects and genres to create this wonderful show and I would recommend everyone who watches anime.

I loved it because I felt it was something new and creative, with a detailed plot and a well-developed cast. It was fun to watch from beginning to end.

3. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

Synopsis

After an untimely, embarrassing and laughable death on his way back from buying a game, high school student and shut-in NEET Kazuma Satou finds himself with a beautiful goddess named Aqua, She gives him two options: continue on to heaven or be reincarnated in a parallel world with MMORPG elements–every gamer’s dream, where he can go for adventures, battle monsters and his tasked with defeating a Demon King who terrorizes the world. And is also allowed to bring into this new world a super-powered item or ability, but after continuous provocation and mockery from Aqua, he chooses Aqua herself to accompany him to the town of Axel. But Kazuma has made a grave mistake–the absent-minded goddess is completely useless.

Kazuma soon realises that living in this new world is different from how it plays out in a game, instead of going on adventures they must first work to pay for their living expenses and for membership into the adventurers guild. Forming a party later and recruiting an explosion-obsessed mage named Megumin and a masochistic crusader named Darkness. But he soon realises fighting monsters are not a walk in the park and quickly gives up the idea of defeating the Demon King and tries to live a luxurious lifestyle, only to find circumstances of their daily lives are forcing him to encounter and battle the Devil King’s generals and actually be an adventurer.

I had my doubts about this anime but I was glad I gave it a chance the only real problem with it was it was only 10 episodes in the first season, there was very little relevant plot and it sometimes promised to be going somewhere with the plot but yet never does but to be that was one of the things that made it better, it was refreshing and I couldn’t stop laughing till the very end.

It was pure joy watching its characters were all funny and awesome, the animation and art were gorgeous and the soundtrack was amazing too. With genuinely hilarious jokes, any flaws this series has are easily forgotten. It will cheer you up and is great for a new anime watcher, you won’t be disappointed.

2. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?

Synopsis

The story follows the adventure of Bell Carnel who live in the bustling city of Orario, a 15-year-old solo adventurer at the beginning, whose under the goddess Hestia and only member of her Familia, he works very hard every day in a magical dungeon to earn a living for them and even on the surface survival is a hard-earned privilege, while trying to improve himself. He hopes to become the greatest adventurer in the land and hero. Looking up to Ais Wallenstein, a famous and powerful swordswoman who saves his life once, he falls in love with her and wishes to become stronger so that one day he can stand beside her as an equal.

He ventures deeper within the city’s monster-filled catacombs, known as the “Dungeon”, with death lurking at every corner, while a mysterious power moves amidst the shadows, he gains allies and gets stronger with each challenge he faces.

I finally got around to watching this and it was very definitely worth watching and became a guilty pleasure for me, it was not the most well-written story but it just works, maybe because of the ton of clichés and fanservice, the pacing can also be sometimes questionable but even so it never fails to entertain. The setting is within an MMORPG game world, the difference this time is that instead, to them that’s the real world for our character and it functions like a game. Gaining experience points, earning loot, leveling up, gaining skills and magic.

Bell is a very new and refreshing protagonist, he’s not a typical imbalanced protagonist, nor a generic shounen hero relying on the power of friendship to save the day, but he is extremely shy, innocent, and a very kind-hearted person who does care for those around him and help them anyhow he can, even if it puts him at risk himself and this makes him very relatable.  

Danmachi gives you much more than you would expect when watching it and I love that about it.

Synopsis

When Haruhito awakens with several men and women in the dark, in the same circumstances as him. He doesn’t know where he is or why he is here, even now he still doesn’t know. Thrown into the world of Grimgar with hazy memories and the knowledge of their name in a world that seems like something out a video game, they have to take the only paying job available in the world to them-being soldiers in the Reserve Army, eliminating anything that threatens the peace of their new world.

When all the stronger candidates join together, those left behind must create a party together to survive, despite its resemblance to a game it’s far from it with no redos or respawns, it’s a kill or be killed world. A ragtag party of Manato, a charismatic leader and priest; Haruhiro, a nervous thief; Yume, a cheerful hunter; Shihoru, a shy mage; Mogzo, a kind warrior; and Ranta, a rowdy dark knight, this is the group we follow as they fight to survive in this new world. 

This is the story of adventurers born from the ashes.

Comments

The show was quite a unique watch and made me want more shows like it the environment, and background felt hand-drawn and were very beautiful and warm. Character growth felt natural and was not unrealistic 0 to 100 time frame, they failed, succeeded, laughed, and cried, they felt like real people’s faults, limitations, and all, and I just loved every moment of it.

They balanced everything out wonderfully in this anime from reflection by characters, which was interesting to watch and not boring with you wishing it was over already, you enjoyed watching them on the battlefield and in their daily lives. There is group development and not just solely an individual’s development, no character is neglected and we get to see how they all live roles, and reactions to events, and this is all balanced out very well. It can be seen as slow-paced because of this but it’s so well done you will end up not minding the pacing, because there is a reason for this, and it’s a good one.

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar can be seen as a slice of life with a combination of realism and narrative showing the characters’ lives and relatively slow progression makes it easy to watch and follow. The sound is just as great as the Art of this anime, also helping convey the mood and story. 

It’s a must-watch fantasy anime but I hate it’s just 12 episodes, I think it deserved more, as we don’t get to see the new developments in the characters at the end of episode 12 being used.
