Among Us Game Review: I Don’t Know What I’m Doing!!

Among Us Game Review

Among Us Game Review

My husband asked me to play a game with him and it turned out to be Among Us. Now, I’m not a gamer and never will proclaim to be one. Still, I thought I could do something he wanted to do together since my shifts at work have been leaving us with less and less time together. So I played.

Of course, the first time I played, I was the imposter. And I had no idea what to do. My knowledge of games is sorely limited so I had no idea what to do or how to do it. There was no tutorial or lessons. The husband basically threw me to the wolves. I think I ran in circles and stood next to people, tapping on them to see if that would do anything. Naturally, it did not. No one guessed it was me but no one died either, so gg, I guess? (gg I learned meant good game).

The next round I couldn’t figure out how to do any of the tasks. Why where those wires NOT connecting? And electrical seemed to be a death trap. Oh, and the oxygen was running low which meant we all could have died. It was a few games later I realized that there was a “use” button that was obvious.

There’s a chat feature in the game where you can talk to other people but I’m not very talkative (surprise, I know). In real life and playing games, I prefer quiet. Turns out my being quiet was sus and my husband (laughing while he did)) voted me to be the imposter and vented me out. Turns out he was the imposter, the little turd.

Since that day, I’ve played a few more rounds and I’ve enjoyed it more and more. It’s not high definition graphics or a mind-blowing plot, but it’s so much fun and so addicting!

What’s It About Though?

Among Us is based on other social deduction party games like Mafia where a group of innocents live their everyday lives while killers, who have hidden their identities, commit murders at night. The group must determine who is guilty and get rid of the imposters before they lose their majority.

InnerSloth, a three-person company, released Among Us in 2018. Willard is the programmer and handles the business of the company. It didn’t cause much of a stir at the time, although it grew popular in countries like Korea and Brazil. It wasn’t until this summer that the game took off in the US, when a Twitch streamer with a fanbase of 2.8 million viewers began to play it.

Among Us costs $5 on PC games store Steam or the indie store Itch.io, and it’s free with ads on mobile. The game requires four to 10 players, who are randomly assigned roles of either a crewmate or imposter. Throughout the game, crewmates try to complete their tasks and imposters try to murder the crew and sabotage the spaceship without getting caught. Among Us involves a lot of lying, accusations and angry denials. My sister in law, who is horrible at lying always gave it away when she was the imposter simply because she can’t lie.
