The Great Subbed vs Dubbed Debate: Which Are You?

When it comes to subbed versus dubbed, anime fans are highly divided and VERY opinionated. There are good points for each side though. So we here at MyAnime2Go decided to do a discussion post about it.

subbed vs dubbed anime

It still remains a preferential thing. I grew up watching Inuyasha as dubbed anime, I cannot imagine watching the show in any other way.

In many cases, dubbed anime can be changed to be more accommodating of child audiences. But, this can mean changing the entire meaning of the show. For example, Yugioh XD had Akiza shown with much smaller breasts and in Dragonball Z, they had Goku’s subbed version sound more childlike and less like an adult, essentially changing the perception of the character.

There are some good things to the Dubbed version instead of subbed though

Anzai in Devil’s Line has an AMAZING English voice actor. His voice is smooth and how I imagine velvet feels on the senses. Zack and Cathy’s laughs are less crazy and annoying in the English version versus the Japanese version of Angels of Death. And in Inuyasha, the dubbed version sounds more like the characters to me than the Japanese version, especially Richard Ian Cox as Inuyasha. But I grew up with the English dubbed so I might be biased with that.

You can see how dubbed is better subbed by watching Ghosts Stories. In failed horribly in Japan but when they made a dubbed version of it in English, they gained a cult following at how horribly inappropriate it is. But subbed can portray the characters the way the author intended better in the first place.

Subbed is perfect if you can focus on what you’re watching but if you’re wanting something in the background (like I often do) than dubbed might be better up your alley.

The blunt answer to this is neither is truly better than the other. They both equally have their own ups and downfalls.

So, discussion time! What do YOU think is better and why? Let us know in the comments below.
