Anime tropes are full of clichรฉs and yet we love to hate them. Some of them are overdone for sure, but some of them we just love to hate! Because we like using weird numbers, here are seven anime tropes we love to hate but might actually love.
1. Ridiculous Power Scaling
Can anyone say Natsu or Fairy Tail in general? They are KNOWN for almost being defeated by a new antagonist and then by “friendship power” suddenly getting a new power-up and winning. Though we can admit that some of the power-ups are really cool to look at, it almost takes away from the fight. First-time watchers will enjoy watching but if you’re a veteran, it can get boring. We still love this trope though.
2. The happy-go-lucky character
These characters are always exaggerated and over the top. They never get bothered by anything or anyone. Just happy go lucky with usually a permanent grin or making silly/funny faces. I think we can admire them at times for their attitude but I don’t think it’s realistic to ALWAYS be happy. Still, it’s a nice break from the truth of life.
3. The exaggerated โMu-ha-ha-haโ
These anime tropes just make me laugh. Starting from when I was a child and watching Pokรฉmon. The exaggerated laugh makes YOU laugh. Usually, the evil anime character will use this laugh or a character who is trying to appear better than the rest. In reality, it just makes them funny. Since then, it’s still used in anime shows today. It’s a nostalgic reminder of the 90’s and better times for me. It’s one of the few that I hope doesn’t die out. Hopefully, comedy anime will keep this funny and still enjoyable anime trope.
4. Oppai
You might recognize this word from One Punch Man. He wears the hoodie/sweatshirt with the words Oppai on them. Personally, I think it’s very bold of him to wear that but, hey, to each their own I guess.
To put it simply, the word refers to breasts, especially large ones. Nine times out of ten, a female anime character will be very well-endowed in the chest area. On top of that, she’ll probably be wearing an extremely revealing outfit, whether it actually makes sense or not. And of course, the guy character will accidentally fall on top of her and end up groping her oppai.
5. Character Unlocks Secret/Forgotten Power Just Before Defeat
Much like Fairy Tail, Dragon Ball Z STARTED the anime tropes of power-ups and unlocking forgotten powers. Dragon Ball Z is KNOWN for their episode-long fight scenes where they power up, screaming, for an entire episode. But we still love to hate it. Or just plain love it.
6. NANIII?
The famous โNANIโ, translation for WHAT?? When a character is in shock or surprised by something, this is the typical reaction. And the words are dragged out to make it more ridiculous. Of course, that’s why it’s been made into so many memes. Even have had a few t-shirts made. It’s one of the few anime tropes that people actually seem to like and not be tired of.
7. Tsundere
A tsundere is a character, most often female and in anime, who switches from being tough and cold towards a love interest into being soft and sweet. Taiga Aisaka from Toradora is one of the most popular and well-known Tsundere’s. Louise in Zero no Tsukaima is another less-known one(but still really good anime) that shows off the popular anime tropes.

A long time before all of the convoluted arcs of sequels like Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, we simply accompanied Goku in search of the seven dragon balls. Even at the beginning, people meet the iconic Master Roshi, Krillin, Piccolo, among other characters.
9. Hunter x Hunter

Based on the manga published in 1998, Hunter x Hunter got its first anime adaptation in 1999. The plot follows 12-year-old boy Gon Freecss, who takes part in a Hunter Exam which is several strange and difficult tests with the hope of finding his missing father. On the road, he meets his friends Kurapika, Killua, and Leorio.
Extremely loved by fans, the anime got a new adaptation in 2011, having a newer design, two films, and much more tales than the initial anime, thanks to the manga having advanced further. While the 1999 anime, came with a musical and three OVAs.

But this all changes when he sees Joe Yabuki fighting. He vows to train the young delinquent to be Japan’s or even the world’s best boxer, with the hope of a better tomorrow for both of them.
Tomorrow’s Joe made history in Japan, simply because of its appeal as an underdog tale. For many years, Joe Yabuki ended up being used as an icon of the youth and other popular promotions even politically. When the manga came to an end, thousands of teenagers honored the series.
7. Mobile Suit Gundam

Also known as Gundam 0079, this mecha anime will make you cry. Illustrates a time when humanity relocated into space after polluting and overcrowding the planet earth. One of many colonies, called edges, declares liberty and, years later, would go to war with Earth. The alleged Republic of Zeon hinges on nuclear and biological weapons and giant war robots to strike the planet.

Arisa is a mystery manga that I like to think of like a detective manga that got my attention after seeing various recommendations of it online. It feels very tele novella like sometimes because of its plot twists. Which felt like a change of pace to what I am used to reading.

Tsubasa and Arisa are twin sisters who haven’t seen each other for three years because of their parents’ divorce. They have communicated through letters, but finally decide to meet each other again. Arisa, the more gentle of the twins, suggests that Tsubasa take her place at school for a day, just for fun. However, there are things about Arisa and her school that she hasn’t mentioned to Tsubasa โ dangerous things.

Kechonpa may seem unusual at first glance for a detective manga, but it’s definitely worth your time. It had a lot of josei-style comedy that I thought was a delightful change of pace, double identities, and the plot interestingly combined fashion and detective themes.
Usotoki Rhetoric is a manga that has a lot to offer detective mystery lovers and historical-based manga readers with its nicely flowing slow-burn plot.
Plot Summary

Possessing a brilliant mind, which she calls “fountain of wisdom,” she seems to know everything, although she never attends classes and is restricted to her room and the school’s library.
Gosick is a detective manga series for readers that love characters that feel real, suspense, and complex cases that will have you guessing. If you are really into mysteries and haven’t read this yet, try it.

Mystery for My Dear A is a detective manga that shows the mangaka love for books through its lots and lots of book references and with an easily relatable main protagonist there is a lot to love about this manga series, even though it feels rushed at some points.

Plot Summary
Handsome, successful, and talented, detective Hiroki Dan has it all. Each investigation solved is another good deed to add to his pile of closed cases. However, while his work is fulfilling, there are still times when he becomes frustrated; the police are helpless when vile people are beyond the reach of the law. It is for this very reason that Hiroki takes matters into his own hands.
While Brutal: Confessions of a Homicide Investigator might not be a well-known detective manga it is still a very good one, that really made me question my opinions of right and wrong. It’s gory and spine-chillingly worth wasting your time on.
Bloody Monday is a manga series with a lot of plot twists, suspense, and exaggerated heroes. That tries to take a more down-to-earth approach to tell its story.
Plot Summary
When a KGB agent is murdered in Japan, the only clue to his death is a memory chip found at the scene of the crime. Fujimaru is recruited by Third-I to decode the chip, which contains a video file of an event called the “Christmas Massacre.” Investigating the incident further, Fujimaru’s father uncovers more information about the homicide and a mysterious code, “Bloody Monday,” before being framed for the murder of his superior. Now, it is up to the hacker Fujimaru to utilize his expertise to help Third-I prevent the spread of terror and destruction in Japan, while attempting to clear his father’s name.
Bloody Monday is a series that is meant for detective manga readers that love the idea of hacking and is good enough to keep you just interested enough to see where the story is heading. It would be nice to see it as an anime someday, maybe.

Neuro: Supernatural Detective is a pleasant story to read regardless if you are not looking for anything I mentioned above. It has a lot of elements added into it but the series prominent one is the psychological theme, figuring out the motivations behind the crime.

Heaven’s Memo Pad is a series with some dark themes and starts slow but picks up if you stick it out, becoming more entertaining and charming. It’s a series that made me try to figure out the who, what, why, when, and how.

Gesicht uncovers evidence of a mysterious entity known only as “Pluto.” Along with this, he learns of a plot to dismantle the eight specialized robots from around the world who took part in the war. Racing against time to save those who remain, Gesicht grapples with his memory, morality, and a world full of hate, desperately attempting to defend the fragile coexistence of man and machine.
Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka is a manga series with plenty of well-done cliffhangers and a great future-retro setting I would love to live in. It’s a masterpiece.
The Kindaichi Case Files is a classic detective murder mystery manga, with a lot of misdirection and red herrings that keep you guessing and turning page after page.
Plot Summary
Kindaichi and his best-bud, Miyuki travels to various places where a murder has taken place, typically involving ghosts, curses, myths and folklore of significant events from the distant past, and solves the mystery using ingenious deductions of curious clues and his cool magic.
The Kindaichi Case Files is a brilliant series and I highly recommend it to detective manga fans that love locked-room murder mysteries.

Death Note is a detective series anyone can enjoy and should always be in your first recommendations for people not familiar with the genre. It is a series that had me guessing till the very end and rooting for our evil protagonist at the very end.

Soon he becomes entangled in a chain of gruesome murders that have taken place throughout Germany. The culprit is a monsterโthe same one that Tenma saved on that fateful day nine years ago.
Monster is one of the best psychological thrillers with an intelligent plot and unpredictable plot twists, memorable and deep characters. It is a manga series I recommend you finally find time to read.
Case Closed, or Detective Conan is a detective manga that has really grown on me and many readers. It’s a manga every fan of the genre should read even a bit of.
Plot Summary
Kudo Shinichi is a high school detective who was poisoned during a confrontation with suspicious criminals, and was transformed to look like a child! Now he staying with the Mouri family and secretly continuing to solve cases while investigating the organization who put him in this situation. Hailed as the savior of the Japanese Police Department, he uses a combination of observational skills, critical thinking, and all-around knowledge to solve cases that leave the police stumped.
Detective Conan is a series I feel that really knows how to balance out the funny hilarious moments with the seriousness of the manga. And I like how for me I can leave it for a while and jump right into a new chapter again with a new case and be able to still follow the plot easily without having to back track.

So I’ve been trying to get back into reading manga. In High School, I would read these ALL the time when I was in class, at home, and during the weekends. Now that I’m almost 30… I rarely have time but miss being able to lose myself in a good manga.
So these are all the new/old mangas I’ll be buying and reading/rereading this summer!
We budget for $50 a month for fun money and I’ve been saving mine so I can get ALL the mangas I’ve been meaning to catch up on and reread this summer.
6.Death Note (All in One Edition)
Death Note, I feel, is a classic. I LOVED the anime and even the musical. The live-action was pretty bad as most are but this anime is great for beginners and I’ve been meaning to see if the manga is any good. This is the complete set of all of them (I enjoy getting them all at once) but you can do one at a time.
5.Angels of Death
ALL of THEM!
Since I’m obsessed with this RPG turned manga turned anime, of COURSE, I would want to own all the volumes. It’s slightly different from its anime and game but I enjoy seeing the different versions.
4.Fruits Basket complete set
Another classic! I’ve even liked the remake that they started last year.
I grew up with this one. The anime is cute, and the manga is a little different but still one of my favorites. It’ll make you cry but laugh as well.
2.Devil’s Line Volume 1 and other volumes
The manga goes more in-depth than the anime did (as usual for books/manga turned into movies/anime) and I loved reading the whole backstory. I only own volume 1 right now and want to get all of them!
1.Ouran High School Host Club COMPLETE Set
Another classic that is great for newbies. It’s witty and wholesome with some pure moments that will make you tear up. The manga feels more complete than the anime, though both are still amazing.
Oh! I’m also looking for the best deal for Kiss Him, Not Me. I read it online after watching the anime. I LOVED it but the anime isn’t complete. The manga actually finishes her journey into love and adds more depth to it. I love deals though so I’m still looking for the best deal for it.

You can not include the classic! Cowboy Bebop is a very popular anime that has an enormous fan base around the world. There is not a single anime fan who has not heard of the series.
The story takes place in 2071. The show follows the titular character Spike Spiegel and his Bebop crew. The show was groundbreaking at the time of its release. It has everything from great graphics to great music. The characters are fun and you will have a gala time binge-watching the show.

Seventh on our list is a science fiction series – โErgo Proxyโ. The first thing that you will notice in the anime is the dark colors, dark mood, and intense character designs. The art style is far different from a typical anime but if you prefer this kind of style and love science fiction, you will enjoy this show.
They set Ergo Proxy in a dystopian world which has a utopian surface, a futuristic world where androids roam around the human world but as you watch more, you realize that it’s more than what meets the eye.
Did we forget to mention it? The show has equally banging music!
6.Katanagatari
The background is the highlight in this anime and not the characters. You cannot miss the details that have gone into making this anime.
The story is simple; it follows a swordsman and his companion on their journey to get their hands on the swords that are supposed to hold significant power. The setting is in the Edo era of Japan. We know the Edo era of Japan for the rise of Shoguns in the country.
There is nothing spectacular about the character’s design but that is the charming point of the show. It is done intentionally to stay as close to the art style of the Edo era of Japan.
5.Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress
Almost every soul on this planet has heard of โAttack on Titanโ. โKabaneri Of The Iron Fortressโ is produced by the same production house, WIT studio, who brought us โAttack On Titanโ.
The drama is for sure overshadowed by โAttack On Titanโ, but it is as good as the uber-popular anime. You can see that โAttack On Titanโ inspires the characters’ designs, action scenes, and even the storyline but there are also vast differences.
Produced by the renowned Kyoto Animation known for producing visually striking shows โViolet Evergardenโ is so beautiful that it will be hard to find another anime that can challenge the graphics used in this. The way the characters are drawn, you will see every brief expression on their face. The artwork is fitting for a romance anime set to explore the love and affection between the protagonists. The story follows a soldier who becomes emotionally detached after fighting in the war. After the war ends she settles down as a ghostwriter. The entire anime is about her and her commander’s relationship.
3.Zankyou no Terror (Terror in Resonance)
It is pretty clear from the name of the anime what the anime is about. It is about terrorism and that is established right from the first episode. Even if you are not into terrorism or anime that deals in heavy topics you still need to check out this anime. The graphics are spectacular.
The anime, also known as โTerror in Tokyoโ follows two teenage boys named Nine and Twelve. The boys have been part of a social experiment which was carried out by the Royal Peace Academy. The boys steal a prototype atomic bomb and upload a video on the internet threatening everyone that they will destroy the city if a riddle is not solved.
2.Little Witch Academia
Produced by Studio Trigger, if you are an anime fan you would know about the other very popular anime produced by the same studio – โKill La Killโ.
The studio did not disappoint in the graphics department this time either. The graphics are as always very fresh and very cute. The graphics are almost cartoony but that makes it so fun. The anime is very colorful compared to โThe Royal Tutorโ.
One thing that sets it apart from other anime is the fact that there are almost no fan services. If you are one of those who dislike fan service because you think it takes you away from the story as the characters act unusually, then this is the anime for you.
1.Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine (The Royal Tutor)
First on the list is a slice-of-life anime โThe Royal Tutorโ. The story is simple, it is about four royal princes who have their royal tutor in the palace. The anime has plenty of life lessons for both the characters and the viewers. It is a heartwarming show, but what makes it even more heartwarming are the graphics used in the show.
The way they drew the characters is unique but also very anime. The color palette used is also beautiful with a lot of earthen muted colors combined with gold and yellow.
I have often compared the show with โAssassination Classroomโ because the plot and the topics The Royal Tutor deals with are very similar to the โAssassination Classroomโ. The similarities end there. The artwork is no doubt much better in โThe Royal Tutorโ.
Japan has a lot more aesthetically pleasing shows. The sheer number of shows that Japan offers makes it impossible to list them all down at once!

High school girl Akari was lost in a forest where she was rescued by a vampire girl named Sophie. Since then, Akari has developed a liking for Sohpie, who prefers to be alone.
Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood. is an anime that does not take itself too seriously that makes fun of itself and otaku culture rather than a serious plot. It will definitely put a smile on your face, that is a relaxing and refreshing take for a theme with a usually bloody darker tone.
18. Noblesse: Awakening

Noblesse: Awakening was a long overdue anime for fans of the manhwa series of the same name and was a setup for the later 13 episodes anime television series that would come out 4 years later.
Plot Summary
He awakens. For 820 years he has slumbered with no knowledge of humanityโs advancements and scientific achievements. The land which he once knew has become an unfamiliar place with new technologies, attitudes, and lifestyles.
Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, Rai, while seeking to familiarize himself with this era, somehow locates a loyal servant of his, Frankenstein, who is currently the principal of a South Korean high school. Rai decides that this high school would be the perfect place to help him learn about the unknown world.
He enrolls, and suddenly becomes the friend of Shinwoo, an immature teenager who is also a master martial artist. But this unknown world is no safer than the old, and the dignified, bewildered, technologically illiterate Rai finds himself caught up in adventures both hilarious and dangerous.
Noblesse: Awakening is a 30 minute long ONA that is quite enjoyable to watch that felt like a bishie vampire anime series to me at least but without the annoying parts and made me try out the manhwa. It definitely has a bit for everyone.

Servamp is a vampire anime that seems like your usual shounen anime but it was more than that. It is an anime that strangely grew on me a bit.
Plot Summary
When a stray black cat named Kuro crosses Mahiru Shirotaโs path, the high school freshmanโs life will never be the same again. Kuro is, in fact, no ordinary feline, but a servamp – a servant vampire. While Mahiruโs personal philosophy is one of non-intervention, he soon becomes embroiled in an ancient, altogether surreal conflict between vampires and humans.
Servamp is a beautifully coloured series with surprising depth now and then in the story, while still being amusing and funny all at once. It’s enjoyable.

Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu is a vampire anime that’s a masterpiece in every form of the word. It serves as a prequel to the main series Bakemonogatari. If you haven’t seen this movie, then give it a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

Plot Summary
Staz is the vampire boss of a section of the demon world, but he has little interest in human blood. Heโs more infatuated with Japanese culture. When he learns that Yanagi Fuyumi, a Japanese teenage girl, accidentally wanders into the demon city, he jumps to the occasion. However, while Staz deals with an intruder on his turf, the oblivious Fuyumi is killed by a monster and becomes a wandering ghost. The disappointed Staz vows to her he will bring Fuyumi back to life.
Blood Lad doesnโt give too much away, leaving us the viewers to make the connections and fill in the dots between characters and places which really adds to its mysterious level and leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Even though it is a simple and fun show to watch.

Vampire Princess Miyu’s plot was very realistic showing how not everyone got what they deserved or wanted. The art style and soundtracks are pretty amazing too, but this anime is definitely for the patient among us.
13. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is another amazing shounen vampire anime on our list that has a fantastic animation. An excellent series with an easy-to-follow plot and not full of overly complex emotional characters.
Plot Summary
Tanjiro is the eldest son in a family that has lost its father. Tanjiro visits another town one day to sell charcoal but ends up staying the night at someone elseโs house instead of going home because of a rumour about a demon that stalks a nearby mountain at night. When he goes home the next day, tragedy is waiting for him.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is not your typical themed type of vampire, that may suffer from some pacing and poor character development but despite all of that is hugely entertaining, especially for vampire anime fans who love their aesthetics.
12. Black Blood Brothers

Black Blood Brothers is a short, hilarious and action-packed vampire anime series that didnโt leave you guessing and speculating on fan theories in a good way.
Plot Summary
During a war called the Hong Kong Crusade, an Old Blood vampire, Jiro Mochizuki, a.k.a. the Silver Blade, fought and defeated the Kowloon king and most of the Kowloon Children. Ten years later, Jiro heads to Hong Kong with his younger brother, Kotaro Mochizuki, hoping to reach The Special Zone, a thriving secret city where Vampires live- (which is separate from the human civilized parts of the city). They soon realize that a plan to infiltrate the Special Zone is being hatched by the Kowloon Children survivors. As they travel to The Special Zone, Jiro encounters enemies from the past and new threats that may endanger the safety of the Special Zone including the citizens. Black Blood Brothers is an anime that was adapted straight from the light novel, it is fun and easy to follow the story, and it has vampires and cute adorable Kotarou. You should try it.
11. Chibi Vampire Karin

Chibi Vampire Karin is a good vampire anime for fans of the theme that also like romantic comedy anime, it’s the best of both worlds for them.
Plot Summary
Karin is a cute little girl who also is a vampireโฆ with a twist. Once a month, she experiences intense bleeding from her nose – weโre talking gushers! Sheโs a vamp with blood to spare, so rather than stealing blood from humans she actually gives her blood to them. If done right, this can be an extremely positive experience that benefits the victim as much as the vampire. The problem is that Karin never seems to do things right!
Chibi Vampire Karin is a vampire anime that does not take itself seriously and it is better for it, instead, it focuses its attention on comedy, characters, fanservice, and colorful visuals. It is a series that is unusual and quirky and I like that about it.
Castlevania is a vampire anime that is gripping, hilarious, beautifully animated, dark, and moving. The characters are not one-dimensional, they all have their reasons they’re doing what they’re doing. Which really blurs the line between right and wrong and really makes you think.
Plot Summary
When his wife is burned at the stake after being falsely accused of witchcraft, the vampire Count Dracula declares all the people of Wallachia will pay with their lives. He summons an army of demons that overruns the country, causing the people to live lives of fear and distrust. To combat this, the outcast monster hunter Trevor Belmont takes up arms against Dracula’s forces, aided by the magician Sypha Belnades and Dracula’s dhampir son Alucard.โWiki.
As a vampire anime series, Castlevania is a masterpiece, thanks to its animation, superb voice acting, character design and well-written plot.

The background is in the distant future, a post-apocalyptic world after the destruction brought about by Armageddon. The war between humans (Terran) and vampires (Methuselah) continues, as a struggle between two factions: the Vatican and the New Human Empire. Yet, amidst the bloodshed and violence, many desire a peaceful co-existence between the two species. However, standing between them and this goal is the Rosenkreuz Orden, a group of vampire extremists who manipulate the two sides and pit them against each other. Like actual trinities to enjoy Trinity Blood, try reading the manga and light novels first because each adds its own dimension of the Trinity Blood universe, but as a stand-alone the anime is also pretty ok.

Plot Summary
Chizuru Yukimura heads to Kyoto to search for her father, finding herself attacked by madmen before members of the Shinsengumi who mistake her for a boy and take her into custody for interrogation cut them down. Upon learning that she is a girl and the daughter of a doctor who developed the Water of Life elixir that turns those that drink it into invincible blood-lusting berserkers called Rasetsu, the Shinsengumi decide to keep her as an aide in their search. In time, as the Shinsengumi aid the shogunate in the Bakufu, Chizuru develops a bond with the Shinsengumi and its aloof member Toshizo Hijikata. However, as time passes, Chizuru and Shinsengumi confront a mysterious faction who call themselves Oni (Demons) and that Chizuru is also an Oni with her father revealed to be experimenting on the Water of Life to create the Rasetsu to conquer humans.โWiki.
Hakuoki is a reverse harem vampire anime with exceptional fight scenes, good-looking characters, humor, and history of the civil war times and the early era. It’s definitely not for every vampire fan but if you also like swordsmanship and history this is for you.

Escaping from a brother who had just ascended the throne, Yoshitsune, along with his servant, comes across a house in the middle of a desolate mountain. Oddly enough, only a young woman lives there, who seems to possess a very dark past. It a story of obsessive love and constant purse told over a 1000 year period.

Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign is a vampire-themed anime I would recommend to beginners or people who have patients because it’s a slow burn type of plot that only gets more interesting gradually.
Plot Summary
One day, a mysterious virus appeared on Earth which killed every infected human over the age of 13. Vampires emerged from the worldโs dark recesses and enslaved humanity. Enter Hyakuya Yuuichirou, a young boy, who along with the rest of the children from his orphanage, are treated as livestock by the vampires. Even in captivity, Yuuichirou dreams big. He dreams of killing vampires. He dreams of killing them all.
Most of the improvements to the show happen in the second season, but maybe that is how it’s supposed to be when you have a story to tell slow and steady build-up. It’s full of memorable fights and a variety of emotions that are sometimes relatable. It is serious for its own good sometimes but it is a memorable series.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a gripping vampire anime film with artistic animation, suspense, action, and some of the best character development in a plot I have seen. And does better than the last movie.
Plot Summary
12,090 A.D. It is a dark time for the world. Humanity is just crawling out from under three hundred years of domination by the race of vampires known as the Nobility. The war against the vampires has taken its toll; cities lie in ruin, it fragmented the countryside into small villages and fiefdoms that still struggle against nightly raids by the fallen vampires and the remnants of their genetically manufactured demons and werewolves.
The story revolves around D, the infamous “dhampir” (born of a vampire father and a human mother) outcast and renowned vampire hunter. His prowess at hunting the creatures of the night allowing his acceptance among humans, they call him to locate Charlotte Elbourne, the lovely daughter of an affluent family who has been mysteriously kidnapped.
Vampire Hunter D is a vampire anime true and true with gothic themes, gore, beauty and shows vampires as both physically strong but emotionally weak beings. Which is always fun to watch and analyze.

Plot Summary
It initially set the series in September 2005 in Okinawa City (Koza) on Okinawa Island near the US Kadena Air Base. Under the care of her adoptive family, the protagonist Saya Otonashi had been living the life of an anemic amnesiac, but otherwise ordinary schoolgirl. However, her happy life is shattered when she is attacked by a Chiropteran, a hematophagous bat-like creature that lives by feeding on human blood. Saya learns she is the only one who can defeat them, as her blood causes their bodies to crystallize and shatter. Armed with her special Katana, Saya embarks on a journey with her family, friends, allies, and her chevalier Haji, to rid the world of the Chiropteran threat and recover her identity. Blood+ is a vampire anime that I think all vampire anime fans will love, it is a series filled with a lot of emotions, action, sadness and is sometimes an underrated anime that is one of the most beautiful anime ever.

Shiki is one of the best vampire anime series on our list, it’s an anime I think vampire anime fans should recommend to non-vampire anime fans to try to get them to like the theme. The plot is great and the build-up though slow was very well done.
Plot Summary
The story takes place on a hot summer in the nineties, in a small quiet village called Sotoba. A series of mysterious deaths spread in the village, when a strange family moves into the long-abandoned Kanemasa mansion. Toshio Ozaki, dean of the only hospital in Sotoba, initially suspects an epidemic. But as investigations continue and the deaths pile up, he becomes convinced that they are the work of the undead plaguing the village. A young man named Natsuno Yuuki, who hates living in the village, is pursued and surrounded by death.
Shiki is a vampire anime that is interestingly haunting and is a story that will stick with you long after the credits have rolled by. Using a small village to look at how we as humans try to ignore our problems.

It really has some fantastic concepts about vampires that I really liked. The women also are not your usual damsel in distress you sometimes get in this type of series but capable.
Plot Summary
Vampires exist. It is the duty of Hellsing, an organization sponsored by the British government, to hide that frightening fact and protect the blissfully unaware populace. Along with its own personal army, Hellsing also has a few secret weapons. Hellsing has controlled Alucard, an incredibly powerful vampire, for years. Although he dislikes being a servant to the Hellsing family, he certainly enjoys his job as Hellsingโs vampire exterminator. Seras is a fledgling vampire and a former policewoman. Although reluctant to embrace her new self, she is still a valuable member of the organization. Integra Hellsing, the current leader, is usually fully capable of fulfilling her duty, but lately, vampire activity has been on the rise. Unfortunately, the cause is more alarming than anything she could have imagined. A group long thought dead has been plotting in secret since their apparent destruction over 50 years ago. Plotting to plunge England, and perhaps the entire world, into war.
Hellsing Ultimate is a series you have to watch though without being overly technical about it to enjoy. It plot is action-packed and interesting, characters are memorable and wicked cool overall. You should definitely watch.

Plot Summary
Binan is a city somewhere in Japan. The Earth Defense Club at Binan High School was a club that did absolutely nothing. When club members Atsushi Kinugawa and En Yufuin were chilling out while soaking in the hot tub at the bathhouse Kurotamayu, a pink beast (Wombat) suddenly appeared out of thin air. I want to save this planet… can you please lend me your strength? The two feel the mood has been ruined by Wombat who talks to them in Japanese about how he wants to save Earth with the power of love. Just then, the son of the bathhouse owner Yumoto Hakone shows up, and as soon as he sees Wombat, he chases it, screaming Let me fluff you up! The next day, Kinugawa and Yufuin are caught by Wombat once again at school along with the other club members Io Naruko and Ryu Zaou.. Bracelets were clasped onto the wrist of these four, along with Yumoto Hakone who bumped into them chasing after Wombat, with a command that they must save the earth. It’s about love-making they hear as a bright light emanating from the bracelet envelops their entire bodies, and the five transform into Battle Lovers, the heirs of the throne of love…
I really enjoyed all the episodes of Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! From the outrageous and hilarious humor, to the self-aware characters, to the heart tugging string scenes. It is a bishounen anime that doesn’t take itself too seriously and it is better for it making it a light-hearted and memorable show.
24. Vampire Knight

Vampire Knight is a bishounen anime with a devastatingly well-written story with drama, emotional struggles and tragic pasts, great characters and an absolutely beautiful setting. Vampire Knight is not a flowery romantic comedy, but it is an anime filled with pretty anime vampire boys.
Plot Summary
Yuukiโs earliest memory is of a stormy night in winter, where she was attacked by a vampire… And then rescued by another. Now 10 years later, Cross Yuuki, the adopted daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, has grown up and become a guardian of the vampire race, protecting her childhood crush, Kaname, from discovery as he leads a group of vampires at the elite boarding school. But also at her side is Kiryuu Zero, a childhood friend whoโs hatred for the creatures that destroyed everything he held dear, is now determined never to trust them. This coexisting arrangement seems all well and good, but have the vampires truly renounced their murderous ways, or is there a darker truth behind their actions. Because in this world of secrets, nothing is as it seems. And the price of misplaced trust may even be worse than death.
Overall as a bishounen anime Vampire Knight is a good show for the teenage girl/fangirls in bishounen fans, the heroine doesn’t have a lot of admirable qualities but if you want to watch a show with a cute girl getting bitten by various hot anime guys, you will love this anime.
23. King From Now On!

As a bishounen anime King From Now On! or Kyou kara Maou! is rather decent, the plot development flow is very entertaining with adventure that is good and gripping, with the bonus of eye candy characters that are likeable to a comedic extent.
Plot Summary
Yuri Shibuya was living a pretty normal life. That changed the day he was dunked into a toilet after an attempt to save a classmate from a gang of bullies. Instead of just getting a good soaking, he’s pulled in. The next thing he knows, he’s in a world that vaguely resembles medieval Europe. If that’s not odd enough, he’s told that he is to be the next Maoh, just because he has black hair and black eyes. The Maoh is the King of the Mazoku, who are coexisting not-so-peacefully with the humans in this world. Much to his subject’s dismay, he’s totally different from the rulers they’re accustomed to. He’s kind, considerate, a believer in justice, and not willing to use violence to solve conflicts. Not exactly someone they want running a country on the very brink of war. Now, Yuri has to deal with trying to become a good Maoh, while at the same time attempting to adapt to this land’s customs and culture, all in a world where the tension between the humans and Mazoku is reaching its peak.
King From Now On! is a lighthearted bishounen which really created characters you will fall in love with, dark undertone elements, with a dash of shounen-ai, crossdressing boys and much more. It’s an anime that might leave you wanting more when you finish the final episode.

The next passenger could be you.
Miracle Train: Welcome to the Oedo Line might have been made with bishounen fans in mind but it was educational (teaching the viewers history about Japan’s Oedo Line), funny and felt like a slice of life anime at some points. It is not a masterpiece but it is definitely a good watch you will enjoy.

But even though 07-Ghost might not be for everyone, it’s a bishounen anime with a slow-moving plot that may be tedious for some but if you give it a chance it will get its hooks into you.

Plot Summary
What if nations were people? What traits would they have? What would this mean for historical events? What if every nation is a pretty boy instead? A hilariously stereotypical pretty boy. America loves burgers, Russia is into vodka, and China has pandas and a Wok.
Hetalia Axis Powers takes these questions and runs with them, personifying countries into characters. The show takes a comedic and light approach to politics and historical events while educating the viewer. Taking place primarily during the events of World War I and World War II, the story focuses on the Axis Powers and occasionally throws the spotlight onto the tumultuous relationship between the Allied Forces. The Axis Powers feature the titular character North Italy, who is clumsy, carefree and loves pasta; Germany, who is very serious but easily flustered; and Japan, who is stoic but has bizarre interests.
Hetalia Axis Powers is the perfect bishounen anime to watch if your brain just needs a break from thinking. Requiring almost no effort to watch, unlike a lot of the more twisty-turney suspense filled animes out there. It is also a good watch if you’re feeling a bit sad, and want some cheering up, offering a laugh or two.
19. Amnesia

Want to watch a bishounen anime where the main character is surrounded by handsome boys and gets a new boyfriend every four episodes then Amnesia is just what you need to fulfill this! Get caught in an entanglement.
Plot Summary
After fainting at work, a young lady awakens in the back room of the cafรฉ she works at with no memory of her life or those around her. Two of her friends, whom she soon learns are named Shin and Toma, are called to help her get home safely. Once she is alone, she meets a spectral boy named Orion that only she can see and hear. He explains that she lost her memories because of his chance visit to her world, so he vows to help her remember who she is.
Amnesia does struggle with its story but does well with its art and music. It also does a good job at giving every fangirl their love scenes with their favourite guy. Amnesia is definitely not for everyone but for an anime that was created from an otome game, it is not a failure.

After attending his beloved Saitohโs wedding, broken-hearted Nagai gets a little too drunk for his own good and lands himself in a hotel room with the brideโs guest, Honda. To top things off, just when he thought he was getting over things he finds out that newlywed Saitohโs bride has run away. What will become of this developing love-triangle?
The ending of Close The Last Door was really unexpected. Leaving fans of the series wanting more. It will definitely leave you laughing sometimes.

This attitude has a lot to do with people minding her business because of the Shirakiin family name, but it troubles Ririchiyo to no end. In search of independence and solitude, she moves to the Maison de Ayakashi, an apartment building full of wealthy tenants and with its own Secret Service. Ririchiyo is eager to be alone, but upon her arrival, she is greeted by Soushi, an SS agent arranged for her by her parents. Ririchiyo tries to turn Soushi away, but Soushiโs dogged devotion to his new mistress will not be deterred. The threat against the residents of the Maison de Ayakashi are not to be taken lightly, after all. And despite his puppy-like demeanor, Soushi is not to be trifled with eitherโฆ
With an enjoyable plot, great music and interesting characters, Inu X Boku Secret Service is a series that looks at how the environment and peers influence and shape us, and whether these changes are good or bad.

In the year 2010, the Holy Empire of Britannia established itself as a dominant military nation, starting with the conquest of Japan. Renamed to Area 11 after its swift defeat, Japan has seen significant resistance against these tyrants in an attempt to regain independence.
Lelouch Lamperouge, a Britannian student, unfortunately finds himself caught in a crossfire between the Britannian and the Area 11 rebel armed forces. Black Butler was a beautiful and haunting ride that took me on an emotional rollercoaster and just came together beautifully and created a bishounen anime that was an enjoyable watch.
Plot Summary
Just a stoneโs throw from London lies the manor house of the illustrious Phantomhive earldom and its master, one Ciel Phantomhive. Earl Phantomhive is a giant in the world of commerce, Queen Victoriaโs faithful servant and a slip of a twelve-year-old boy. Fortunately his loyal butler Sebastian is ever at his side, ready to carry out the young masterโs wishes. And whether Sebastian is called to save a dinner party gone awry or probe the dark secrets of Londonโs underbelly, there apparently is nothing Sebastian cannot do. In fact, one might even say Sebastian is too good to be true or at least, too good to be human.
Even though Black Butler is a poster-boy bishounen anime made for fangirls, it is definitely not for everyone, the story can be tedious to follow and require your full attention not to miss anything but definitely for the bishounen fan who wants mystery and a little action in their bishounen.
13. Diabolik Lovers

Diabolik Lovers is a reverse harem and a bishounen anime, with another set of vampires! With six different yet gorgeous vampire siblings fawning over one human girl. That is definitely for the masochist bishounen fan.

The manga adaptation of the otome game. The story centers around the six sadistic Sakamaki vampire brothers and a girl, Komori Yui, who goes to live with them. Yui Komori is a positive-thinking girl who nevertheless is troubled by seeing spirits and experiencing poltergeist phenomena. In her second year in high school, she transfers to a new school โ a night school for entertainers and celebrities โ due to her fatherโs work. There are rumors that there are vampires among the student body, and Yui ends up living with the Sakamaki brothers.
Diabolik Lovers is a bishounen anime, that’s definitely not for everyone but maybe a select few but it is a bishounen anime so it’s good to have a taste of everything.
12. Reborn!

Reborn! is a bishounen anime that ticks all the dots from being outstandingly well made anime, cute guys, to adorable chibi mascots you’ll just want to take home. I definitely recommend that you watch it if comedy and action is your cup of tea.
Plot Summary
Tsuna comes home one day, only to be greeted by a little baby mafioso who apparently is his new home tutor. His job is to guide Tsuna into his role as the 10th Boss of the Vongola mafia family. With the help of all his new friends and an array of special items such as the “Dying Will Bullet”, he might just be able to do it.
Even though Reborn! Starts off slow, it quickly changes the pace after a few episodes. It would be sad to miss out on the emotional rollercoaster that is Reborn! I laughed, got sad, felt elated when they overcame an obstacle and just felt so attached to the characters at the end of the series.
11. Samurai Jam: Bakumatsu Rock

Samurai Jam: Bakumatsu Rock is a bishounen anime filled with rock and roll and shirtless cute guys. It’s not great, but it’s not bad the few things that make it different really make it fun to watch.

The story is set in the Bakumatsu era, at the end of the shoguns’ rule over Japan in the middle of the 19th century. The Tokugawa shogunate uses the brainwashing Heaven’s Songs by the top idols in Shinsengumi to subjugate the country and its people. In this Japan, writing or singing any songs besides the Heaven’s Songs is a capital offense. Ryลma Sakamoto and the other rockers rise up and change the world with rock ‘n’ roll for freedom and justice.

10. Natsume’s Book of Friends

Natsume’s Book of Friends is not your typical bishounen anime, it has a lot going for it that it feels like the bishie factor was added in as an afterthought. It’s an anime that offers a beautiful experience that I think everyone should watch.
Plot Summary
Natsumeโs just an ordinary kid, except he can see spirits, just like his grandma Reiko could. Reiko, though, used to bully the spirits, and bound them to her will in the Book of Friends. Now that Natsume has inherited this book, a never-ending stream of spirits is coming after him. With the help of a spirit cat (who really just wants Natsume to die so he can have the book), Natsume spends his days dissolving the contracts that bind the spirits and trying not to get killed.
It’s a bishounen anime that offers a very relaxing, heartwarming, powerful and thought-provoking experience. The amount of emotions you’ll experience is nothing short of incredible. Natsume’s Book of Friends is a masterpiece that left me enthralled.

K-Project is a bishie made for a bishounen fan, who wants to fill their eyes with hot guys. It’s an anime that is more than what it looks like at first glance. The K-Project plot is tragic, dark and deep. Looking at the story of betrayal, friendship, sacrifice and the bond that can be formed from these situations.
Plot Summary
“Kings” are individuals who have been bestowed with incredible supernatural powers and granted the ability to recruit others into their clans. Protecting the lives and honor of their clansmen is an integral part of the Kings’ duties. After a video depicting the heinous murder of a Red Clansman spreads virally, the unassuming student Yashiro Isana is accused of homicide. Now, a manhunt is underway for his head, bringing him into contact with the infamous “Black Dog” Kurou Yatogamiโa skilled swordsman and martial artist determined to follow the wishes of his late master, the Seventh King.

Plot Summary
In this screwball romantic comedy, Haruhi, a poor girl at a rich kidsโ school, is forced to repay an $80,000 debt by working for the schoolโs swankiest, all-male club–as a boy! There, she discovers just how wealthy the six members are and how different the rich are from everybody else… Not realizing sheโs female due to her appearance, they fix her up and give her a male uniform. Sheโs an instant hit, so they decide to have her keep up the charade even after they find out the truth. Haruhi, being common almost to a fault, doesnโt know what to make of the unconventional activities of the Host Club (or of the even more unconventional members), but having little choice, she plays along. Before long, real bonds are formed, friends made, and Haruhi finds herself accepted in a way she could never have been otherwise in this affluent school.
Ouran High School Host Club is the perfect balance for bishie fans looking for laughs, romance, emotional moments, or liked boys that are classified as the prince-type, loli-shota type, cool type, devil type or a natural rookie type. It is a must watch.

And with each bishounen character with their own unique type from the shy type, to the bad boy type, etc there is a lot to like about Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru.
Plot Summary
The year is 2205. The “historical retrograde army” have begun attacks on the past in their plot to change history. The Saniwa, who have been charged with protecting history, can imbue life into objects. Strongest among these are the Token Danshi, swordsmen who had originally lived as legendary swords. The story centers around their cheerful lives.
Fair warning, some people have complained that you need to have knowledge of the source material of Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru to understand the anime. But I honestly don’t think you need to, to watch cute anime boys doing cute stuff.
6. Kuroko’s Basketball

Kuroko’s Basketball is a bishie for the sport fan, with outrageous basketball skills and young muscular athletic guy with gorgeous faces. It is a bishounen sports anime that even fans that are not really into sports anime will find fun and entertaining to watch.
Plot Summary
Kuroko’s Basketball follows the journey of Seirin’s players as they attempt to become the best Japanese high school team by winning the Interhigh Championship. To reach their goal, they have to cross pathways with several powerful teams, some of which have one of the five players with godlike abilities, whom Kuroko and Taiga make a pact to defeat.
Kuroko’s Basketball manages to capture your interest in the game being played and relate the thrilling games to unrelated moments in our lives. It is a story about underdogs, determined characters, comedy and portrays basketball in a realistic but not too realistic way.

Plot Summary
Nanami Haruka is a shy teenage girl who has a dream to become a talented songwriter. She is accepted by Saotome Gakuen, an elite entertainment industry school developed for the sole purpose of nurturing future idols. The classes are taught by famous idols; facilities include top notch recording studios and live theaters. Most importantly, only a small portion of the most talented, natural born idol students are allowed into the prestigious Shining Agency after graduation and introduced to the nation. The school randomly pairs up a singer to a song writer but as fate would have it, Haruka ends up being paired with 3 very different boys all striving to become the next big idol; Ittoki Otoya is upbeat and lively, Shinomiya Natsuki is bright and intelligent, Hijirikawa Masato is cool and calm. Haruka, determined to make all three boys into future idols must work harder than anyone else and overcome her shy personality if she wants to reach her dream.
Uta no Prince Sama is a bishie anime that has a sexy guy for each bishounen anime fan from the cute innocent one, the serious one, the yandere one, the tsundere, the ladies man, to the Iโm-gonna-be-completely-rude-to-you-because-I-can-do-everything-on-my-own-but-Iโll-warm-up-to-you-eventually one. There are also yaoi elements in the plot, overall Uta no Prince Sama is interesting and entertaining for a bishie fan.

Momozono Nanamiโs dad, a man with a penchant for gambling, disappeared after accumulating a huge amount of debt. Thus, she was chased out of her house by the debt collectors. When she met a timid man being chased by a dog, he told her that heโd give her his house. She believed his persuasive talk, but when she went to his houseโฆ it turned out to be a shrine. Moreover, a guy with fox ears appeared, which made Nanami even more confused. What will become of homeless and confused Nanami?
Kamisama Kiss is a bishounen made for the fans of the genre that love seeing handsome anime guys but are romantics at heart. It is not a very mainstream series but it is lighthearted, sweet with a dash of supernatural occurrences and has all the eye candy a bishie fan would want.

As an unnaturally heavy mist descends on the battlefield, King Andragoras and his most valued officers confer. When Daryoon, a young but highly skilled officer, voices his reluctance to send men into battle under these conditions, the king, unstable and enraged, banishes him. Now, Daryoon’s new mission is to ensure the safety of the King’s only son, Prince Arislan. Daryoon and Prince Arislan set off on a quest of their own, but they can’t succeed alone. They must convince both the Lord Narsus and his companion, the archer Elam, Gieve and Falangies to join them in their quest to somehow help the soldiers win the war. Now a group of only six they must somehow overcome an enemy of 300,000 soldiers! These unlikely soldiers have fate on their side, so anything can happen!
The Heroic Legend of Arslan has a bishie anime as its flaws, but it’s still well worth the watch plus the handsome anime guys should more than make up for it, for a bishounen fan who’s interested in watching a good war anime.

Plot Summary
Princess Yona lives an ideal life as the only princess of her kingdom. Doted on by her father, the king, and protected by her faithful guard Hak, she cherishes the time spent with the man she loves, Soo-won. But everything changes on her 16th birthday when she witnesses her fatherโs murder!
Yona of the Dawn is a solid bishounen anime worth the time of all anime fans even non bishie fans and is a good starter anime for anyone who is just getting into the bishounen genre. Yona of the Dawn is a complete pleasure and a must watch for the uninitiated.

Plot Summary
Haruka Nanase has a love for water and a passion for swimming. In elementary school, he competed in and won a relay race with his three friends Rin Matsuoka, Nagisa Hazuki, and Makoto Tachibana. After claiming victory at the tournament, the four friends went their separate ways. Years later, they reunite as high school students; however, Rin couldn’t care less about returning to the way things used to be. Not only does he attend a different school, but the sole thing important to him is proving that he is a better swimmer than Haruka.
After the bitter reunion, Haruka, Nagisa, and Makoto decide to form the Iwatobi High School Swim Club, but they will need a fourth member if they hope to take part in the upcoming tournament. Enter Rei Ryuugazaki, a former member of the track team whom Nagisa recruits. As the time to compete draws near, the four develop a close bond while training intensely to come out on top and settle things between Haruka and Rin once and for all.

Waifu: Origin and Meaning
Waifu is a term that was first introduced in the English-speaking world through the high-school anime series Azumanga Daioh. The term became popular through a scene of this particular anime.
In the scene, the main lead’s homeroom teacher Mr. Kimura is seen dropping a photograph of an unknown woman by accident on the classroom floor. When confronted by his students about the identity of the mysterious woman, Mr. Kimura introduces her as “Mai Waifu.”
The series aired in Japan from April to September 2002 and was released in the United States in September 2005.
